The earlier Night

The thick silence that spread between them after Sameer's query made Pari anxious, agitated, and even curious of his intentions now. She found it bit unusual of him to inquire about the matter that was the gravest between them. Something that might lead to his downfall.

Was he tricking her into believing him again so that he could be assured of his safety, or was it seriously an attempt on his part to know what she thought to do for her well-being?

She was caught between the thin line of revealing him, and not revealing him; for a second, she felt angry but then as she gazed at her with his assuring eyes, she realized that he was only being thoughtful in making her open about her feelings. What could he even get even if he had any selfish motive now?

He was drowning in the loopholes of his life; there is nothing he could gain now, nor he could lose anything anymore. She had the control of his life now.

"I...," she had started only when the power went off suddenly. They heard the windows crashing against each other, as the hard wind entered the room combined with the dust making it impossible for them to sit at the dining hall.

On impulse, they rushed to close the windows, and together they did it in the process brushing their hands against the other. It was a normal touch which didn't excited either of them.

Though, they could hardly see the other but the small moonlight that entered the room was enough for Pari, to move around and fetch a few candles. She lit up the room and he stood near the window watching her move gracefully in her room.

"Were you always so adjusting to your surroundings or is it now?"

"Excuse me?" She frowned not getting his question.

"Generally, people freak out in this kind of black out but you're moving like nothing happened." He said in fact.

"Well, there are two kinds of people. One, who knows how to accept the storms in their lives and live. Two, who run away from the truths of life. My type is one..........

"Impressive." He commented walking to her, and taking one candle from her hand, he held her other hand ushering her to the couch. He put the candle on the floor as he waited for her to reply him.

"You're pretty persistent on knowing my views; why?" She asked finally.

"I'm just thinking when you value yourself so much then why'd you allow yourself to be disrespected and not even take any action against it?"

"Who said I didn't thought of taking an action against you?" She raised her brows at him nonchalantly.

"You did?" He asked surprised.

Taking a deep breath, she started, "After I came back, it took me a while to get myself together; once I was over crying, my anger took over me and I decided to file a complaint against you. I even went to the lawyer to make the papers but when I explained her my scenarios; she asked me one question."

"What question?"

"She asked me that if you were intolerable since the first day then why did I stick to you? In the court, we can't just say that you were in love with his abusive nature also; this action would be considered as an attempt to take out money from your husband because there have been false cases too recently where the woman has accused their husband for violence and rape but actually, it never happened. The small issues were given the name of the domestic abuse and overall, you belong to a middle class; straight away the other lawyer is going to prove you as the one who wanted the luxuries of her husband. What would you do then?"
