Again.

His father would go home late again, with his group of friends to have yet another gambling session. Where all his money would, again, go to waste. All the money that could've been used to buy food. All of it would just disappear into thin air.

Again.

He saw her older sister, sneaking into the house with the same guy that his father has disapproved of for many times. Her breath reeking of alcohol yet again.

When she would force him to shush and keep it all a secret. When he would just give in and let things happen because he knew that his father wouldn't give a shit.

Again.

He would comfort his younger brother to keep him from having another nightmare. Another night terror that kept the kid up all night because he was scared that it'll happen again.

He would watch as the younger male feared everything around him. He feared his father. He feared his sister. He feared the dark, enclosed spaces, reptiles, ghosts, heights, everything.

Again.

He wanted to run away from it all. He wanted to leave everything behind and be happy on his own. He wanted to run away from all the responsibilities that wasn't his in the first place.

And so he did.

He ran away, only taking his hoodie with him. He climbed up his bedroom window, leaving his brother who only watched as he saw his brother escape from his problems.

He started having second thoughts as he saw his brother's teary eyes. He pursed his lips, unsure of what he wanted to do. If he wanted to leave his brother behind. He was about to climb back up and stay until..

“Go.”

The kid said, his voice as soft as clouds, he waved his older brother off. He wore the biggest smile as a crease was formed in between his eyebrows.

He climbed down the emergency ladders and landed safely on the grass. He put the hood of his jacket over his head, shoving his two clenched fists inside his pocket.

He ran, as fast as he could go, to the dock. He knew she wouldn't be there considering that it was already midnight but he chose to take his chances.

He ran and ran until he saw her, laying down on the wooden planks, eyes closed as tears were still streaming down her cheeks even on her sleep.

He took off his hoodie, the cold breeze greeting his, now bare arms, his undershirt not doing a great job of keeping him warm. He folded it and put it under her head, serving as a pillow.

He laid down as well, facing to his left to look at her. She looked so peaceful, as if she wasn't struggling with her life. As if she's never been beaten up in her while life. As if she were a normal, happy girl.

A smile formed on his face and he felt his heart skip a beat as she unconsciously turned to his direction. She looked so weak and vulnerable. It made him want to protect her.

I'm going to protect you, no matter what.
