Chapter Three
M.
I turned the corner as fast as I could and fell back against the wall, listening for anymore foot falls. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to catch my breath. After I had finished my lunch I had left to find my other class. I never heard the footsteps behind me, but I heard the voice.
"Madeline, right?" I shivered at the memory of his voice. Deep and husky, his accent thick and rough. It made me jump and fall, something I didn't do often. I was a graceful person and I prided myself in my ability to be agile and fast. That he snuck up on me seriously unnerved me. Then while I was on the ground I looked up and saw his face. He was very handsome with a rugged face that was naturally tanned and ash blond hair. His eyes were a deep blue and he had a straight nose and thin lips. He had a square jaw and corded muscles along his body. It wasn't hard to see he worked out with how his thermal long sleeve stretched across his body. I was surprised at my reaction to him, eyes wide, heart thudding, and face burning. I'd never had that reaction before, to any boy.
Then he had confronted me.
"Why is she not good enough to be your friend City Girl?" he spat. I shook my head. He had no right to judge me, he didn't know me, or my life so why should I feel like the jerk here?
At that moment the bell rang, and I headed to my last class of the day, P.E. I always enjoyed P.E. because it allowed me to work out my frustration on anything that was bothering me. I was extra grateful for it now as I found the girls' locker room and hurriedly changed. I greeted the teacher as I had so many times before that day and waited for the rest of the students to come out. The teacher introduced me, and I noticed that the guy that confronted me in the hall, otherwise known as Cowboy.
Great, I thought as we made eye contact and I glared at him. He looked shocked for a second before he glared back. No one seemed to notice as the teacher continued with his speech.
"Due to the weather we will be indoors for a while most likely, and today we'll play a little game of indoor kickball." he said. Some of the kids groaned and some, like me, smiled, wanting to play.
"Okay there will be two teams obviously. Who would like to be the captains?" Two people raised their hands, Cowboy and another guy with dark brown hair, chocolate brown eyes and very handsome features. He was taller than the guy who confronted me but a little less muscular. Hmm are all the guys here so handsome? No, bad Madeline, no relationships until college, remember that. I firmly reminded hormones of my promise to myself three years ago when we had moved for the third time. I was just starting to get into a relationship but that was cut short after the move and he quickly found a new girl after. I was done with trying at that point and decided when I was in college and not moving around so much then I would get into a relationship.
Shaking my head, I realized they were picking teammates. There were only about twenty people in the class, so it went by fast. There were five people left including me who made it six and when I looked over to the ash blond guy I saw him sizing me up and sneered at him. He smirked mockingly at me and chose the guy to my right. The guy with the dark brown hair smiled goofily and pointed at me.
"Hey new girl, how about you come to my team?" he said. Ah, I realized, he's a charmer. Cute. Smiling evilly, I walked over to him and stood to his left. I was going to crush Cowboy's team. Leaning down to my height he said, "By the way, I'm Axel." he smiled and held out his hand.
"Madeline," I said shaking his hand.
"It's nice to meet such a lovely lady." he said, his accent was lazy and drawn out which was quite warming. I smiled.
