•"Remember that story the seventh year kids told all the first year kids? The story of the death eater that didn't escape." Chris spoke in a low voice as he took Phil into the corridor. Most of the students had cleared out now and Phil and Chris were alone. Phil pulled out the map from the satchel sling around his body and checked. No people within a sixty foot radius.
"Yeah Chris, it was a stupid story made up to scare some ten year olds. It's not real." Said Phil as he folded up the map and stuck it back in his bag. Chris shook his head.
"Well this corridor isn't a normal corridor. That's why it was abandoned." Chris was careful as he spoke and he lead Phil to a large copper statue. It was a tribute to the fallen fifty. The ones who died in the battle of hogwarts. It was a copper statue of a wizard in the school robes, it was a student. The copper face changed every time you looked at it. One second it had a face with shallow cheek bones, the next would be a full and round. It was a loop of the fifty. Listed below were the names of the people.
"Well it's more than just a changing statue. There's a reason they closed off this corridor dan, there's something much bigger in the picture. This is the seventh floor. Majority of the fallen fifty were killed right here in this hallway by a death eater." Chris Carried on by pointing to the eyes. Inside the eyes were small numbers, they flashed for just a moment, then vanished.
"The death eater that killed them couldn't have gotten away. They all went to askaban." Phil said as he watched the numbers flash as the students faces change. It was about every thirty seconds.
"Phil. This is a code. Behind the statue are the paintings of the fallen fifty. Go check behind one." Chris insisted as he pointed to the wall behind the endlessly changing statue.
A girl with red hair in tight pigtails. He didn't know the name of the girl, as it was unsaid. But the statue would take shape of her face soon enough.
Phil pulled the redheaded girls picture off the wall and behind it was a number scratched into the stone. 27.
"Chris, you're extremely smart. You may be one of the smartest ravenclaws. Puzzles click together in your head in seconds. But I don't understand what you're getting at." Phil said as he put the girls picture back on the wall.
"We need to identify who this list of people is. Then we need to reorganize their pictures to match their names on the list and number on the wall." Chris explained as he pointed his wand to the picture in the top left corner. He gave a swift flicked, and the picture floated off the wall and behind it was the number one.
"The first name on the list is Emily wright. Not this hairy looking buff guy. We need to find a book on the battle of hogwarts, and identify these students. Then we can figure out where everyone goes." Chris explained as he put the painting back and turned to Phil.
"And what do we do when we organize the paintings?" Phil asked as he crossed his arms and looked at the fifty smiling, happy students. Thinking about the battle of Hogwarts made him sick. All the death right in the room he was in. He hated it. He wanted to get out.
"What if I told you that I have reason to believe the death eaters travelled quick in the school not by running. It would be to slow to get where they needed to go." Chris started as he started pacing. Phil could tell he was thinking deeply, and that he was set on solving this. The battle of hogwarts had always intrigued Chris. "Walking would be impractical when you have magic."
"You can't apparite though. It would be traced and the ministry would have a record. It's not possible." Phil pointed out. Chris nodded.
"The wall Phil. The death eaters opened up portals in the walls similar to nine and three quarters. The ministry must have tried to shut down all the portals after the battle, but they can only be shut off by the person it was created by. Just like how the ministry is the only one who can shut off nine and three quarters." Chris explained as He studied the face changing statue.
"Since the death eater that made this portal is the one that supposedly got away, the ministry could never force him to shut it off. He's long dead by now, so they'll never be able to shut the network he created in the castle off. The school closed off the rooms with the magic walls. This has to be one of them." Phil said as he realized what Chris had discovered. It was the ultimate secret passage in hogwarts.
"And how does hogwarts hide their secrets? Puzzles. Riddles." Chris said as the number 50 appeared in a boys eyes. "All we need to do is match the numbers in their eyes, to their number on the wall. Since have their names, we can match the name on the plaque to the face on the statue. Then match the person number to their picture on the wall."
"Chris this is insane! Seventh floor. We're not even suppose to be in this hallway. It's a memorial. If we're caught tampering it'll be detention for life." Phil said. He was already invested in the riddle though. Maybe he could go to the library and find some book on the matter. There must be something on the fallen fifty in one of the books on the battle of hogwarts.
"Phil this will change the whole passage finding games. We mark this place on the map and we're the new generation of Marauders."
