Chapter 5

I wake up this morning determined to find out more about Jason. The only problem is that he isn't there. None of them are. Everyone misses school once in a while, so I don't mention it to my parents when I get home. I don't want them to overreact and hurt him.

What are you saying? An inner voice snaps. You barely know this person, but your already acting as if you have feelings for him. You know there is no room for that in your life!

"Shut it," I mutter.

A few more days go by and none of them show up. This really isn't looking good for them.

After school, I grab a stake (only a precaution, of course) and drive to his house to see if they are still in the area. I stop the vehicle about a quarter mile from his house and let the air out of one tire. Then, I run the rest of the distance and don't pass any other houses.

You are so screwed if you get in trouble here.

I run up the long, winding driveway and keep a sharp eye out in case I need to duck for cover. As soon as I can see the house, I dodge into the woods and continue running. It is very difficult to be quiet while running through woods, so I don't even try. I slow and quiet myself, however, as I draw nearer. Finally, I hide behind a large tree and peer around the edge. Cars are parked in the driveway and lights are on in the house, sure signs that they are still here.

That's all you wanted to know. Now get out of here!

"Lilly?"

I freeze and turn around to face Jason. "Uh...hi."

"What are you doing here?" He asks, perplexed. "Why are you hiding behind a tree?"

I sigh, relieved. "There's a perfectly logical explanation, Jason."

"Are you following me?"

"What? No!" I lie. "My car got a flat a little ways up the road and this was the first driveway I saw."

He sighs and paces toward me. I back up against the tree. "Jason, what are you doing?"

I hold my breath as he pushes open my sweatshirt and removes at the stake. "This," he says, as he takes a few steps back, "is much to dangerous for children." He tosses it over his shoulder. "What are you really doing here, Lilly?"

"Why are you so calm?"

"Why did you come to Frazee?" Jason asks. "Don't try lying. I know you're a hunter."

I'm not surprised that knowledge. "Is that why you haven't showed up to school the last few days?"

He hesitates, and then looks me in the eye. "Yes."

"Then you already know why I came here," I say sadly.

He exhales. "I figured it was only a matter of time before hunters were after me for those girls."

"You're not denying it," I state.

"What's the point if you already know-or think you know-that it's me?"

"Do I not know the whole story?"

"My answer depends on if you are willing to listen."

I consider this. There is no doubt that all of them are inside waiting and listening to our conversation. I will not be able to kill him and get out of here alive. They'll rip me to shreds before I get ten feet. "Yes, I'll listen. Are there ears on us?"

"Of course."

"Can we talk in private?"

He stiffens. "No. It's safer if we talk here."
