Chapter 12
Both of our eyes widen in fear. I brace myself for the impact and death, quickly muttering a prayer to God.
Bam!
The collision ripples through both cars, crumpling them. Glass shoots out in all directions, coming down like a harsh rainfall. Raine and I are whipped forward and hit our heads on the glass. Pain shoots through my head and the car alarms go off. I look up. The other car, which is one of those small Chinese cars, is a few feet away from us. I notice one other thing, too.
Jason.
He's wedge between the cars. Slowly, he stands up, unharmed, and looks me in the eye. I blink and he's gone.
Maybe I am going crazy, is my last thought before I lose consciousness.

I wake up in a hospital bed. The walls are white and the bed covers are pink. I'm hooked up to an IV and a heart monitor. My head is bandaged and I'm sore all over, nothing that won't heal quickly, though. Raine is in the same room, in the bed next to mine. A doctor knocks on the door and enters. It's not anyone I'm familiar with, which is probably a good thing-it means I haven't gotten injured too often. He's around forty years old with brown hair. Thankfully, he skips all the 'hello' crap and gets straight to business. "Are you feeling any better?" he asks.
"It means something if I have feeling, so you take a guess. You're the doctor." I don't know why I'm being a smart ass to the doctor. He's just trying to perform his job.
"So, you're feeling better?" he asks, to clarify.
"Sure."
He checks my vitals once more. "Everything looks fine, except for your head," he reports and jots things down on his clipboard. "We'll keep you a few days just to make sure it stays that way."
"What about Raine?" I ask. "Will she be okay?"
"Her injures are more severe than yours," he tells me. "Besides needing stitches for her head, she also has some cracked ribs. It'll be a long recovery for her."
"How long?" I ask, my voice cracking.
"About four months of bed rest, but it could have been much worse," he reminds me.
I say nothing. I tried to warn her. I tried to warn her. That's all I can think.
"Do you think you're up to talking to the police? They have to file a report."
"Send them in," I approve.
The doctor leaves and Caspian enters, looking spiffy in his uniform. He shuts the door completely behind him.
"I...I..." I struggle to find the right words.
He holds up his hand to silence me, and seats himself in a chair beside me. "Tell me everything."
"I thought you were all at Great Aunt Sally's," I point out.
"They are-I'm not," he answers smoothly. "Tell me what happened."
I hesitate. "Her phone fell on the floor and she bent to pick it up. That's when we crashed. It's as simple as that."
He nods. "Now this is off the record. From what I've seen of the wreck," he says, "it appears that there was something between the cars. What was it?"
I'm not sure whether or not to bring Jason up since he's supposed to be at his 'Great Aunt's', whatever that's code for.
"Or it was rather a who, wasn't it?" Caspian prompts, seeing my hesitation. "Off the record," he assures me.
