Chapter 8

"Lilly. Lilly?"

I wake to Jason's tender voice, gently shaking me awake.

"Huh? What?" I ask groggily, gathering my surroundings. "Where am I?"

"You're home, Lilly," Jason answers.

I take a look around. I am at my house; the front yard light is still on. It's dark out and the trees look like monsters rising out of the shadows. Where is the vampire that tried to kill me? Did he follow the car home? Is he in the house? No, he wouldn't be able to be in the house, not with all the crosses and anti-vampire artifacts in there. There is no way that he can touch anyone inside that house, so I have nothing to fear.

Many questions haunt me and I don't have answers to very many of them. Why didn't the holy water work? Was something done incorrectly during the blessing?

"Thank you," I say, looking him in the eye. Then, once again realizing how dark it is, I ask, "What time is it?"

"It's..." he pauses, glancing at the moon, "10:35 exactly."

"How do you know for sure? You're not wearing a watch."

His smile could light up the whole world. He chuckles. "One becomes very accustomed to the position of the moon in relevance to the time after living so long. Come on. Let's get you inside." He opens the car door for me. Such a gentleman.

I retrieve my purchases from the trunk and we let ourselves into the house. My mom is sleeping on the couch. We gently set the bags on the floor and we step outside again for a moment.

"Jason, you better go before my mom wakes up," I suggest. "She doesn't know about us and I know she isn't too fond of you right now."

"That's understandable," he replies, a sad smile passing across his face. "What sensible person would want her daughter dating a vampire?"

I try to comfort him. "They don't know you. They don't know how you're different from the others."

"Somehow I doubt that would offer much comfort."

"Well, then they should take my word about you." I sigh, exasperated, and we fall into silence.

"Well, goodnight, Lilly," Jason says and walks away.

"Jason?"

He turns around. "Yeah?"

"Thanks for saving me today."

"Anytime," he replies. "I won't let them hurt you, Lilly."

"I know you won't."

We hug before he leaves me for the night. I go inside and wake up my mom.

"How dare you take off like that?" she screeches at me. "Do you have any idea how worried your father and I were?"

"I'm sorry," I apologize. I knew this wasn't going to be easy. "I just needed a break to have fun, be a teenager."

"It is not your duty to have fun. You are supposed to be helping us take care of Jason, and so far you haven't turned up squat!" she spits at me.

"I may not be turning up much on Jason, but I did turn up something interesting tonight!" I start walking up to my room.

Suddenly, she wants to listen. "What did you turn up?"

"Why should I tell you?" I question. "If I don't turn something up, you yell at me like it's my fault. If I do turn something up, you drag me with you wherever the case takes you."
