Lying in agony on the ground at Bobby's place, I reach out for Sam, who's right beside me. "Sammy. Sammy, come on, I've got a broken leg, you've gotta carry me." Sam doesn't answer at all, and I realize how badly he's hurt. "Son of a bitch", I mutter as I pull out my flip phone from my pocket. I dial 911 because I know we both really need help. "Hello, 911, what's your emergency?" I hear dispatch on the other side of the line and respond, "I need an ambulance." I look down at my broken leg, "My leg is broken." My eyes find Sam and he is completely unconscious. Holding back tears, "and my brother, he's hurt real bad." The lady asks, "Ok, sir, where are you and your brother?" I answer, "Singer Auto, please hurry!" The woman ask me, "One ambulance or two?" At this point I'm getting rather angry because as far as I know, Sam could be dying in front of me. "One, I'm not gonna go without him!"
After I hang up, all I can do is wait for help. Scooting ever so slightly toward Sam, I reach out and lightly grab his hand. "It's gonna be ok, Sammy." A tear rolls down my face as I lay my head back down, my hand still intertwined in his. Three minutes later, I hear a loud siren coming our way. The ambulance slows down as it gets to us, and parks. Two paramedics jump out and each one grabs a stretcher. One starts working on Sam immediately, and the other one comes up to me and carefully lifts me onto the stretcher. I'm in so much pain, but I don't care. All I want is my brother to be ok. I'm loaded into the back of the ambulance and Sammy too. We set off for the hospital, and once I get an IV of painkiller, my thoughts never leave my brother, but then I also start thinking about our job. Sioux Falls General is being overrun by Leviathans. "What hospital are we going to?" The paramedic with deep green eyes and brown hair answers, "Sioux Falls General." I start to freak out, "No! No!" Fucked beyond all recognition, I dread the rest of the ride to the hospital, and keep my eyes locked on Sam. He's definitely in worse shape than me, he's got three IVs, oxygen, and is being looked over head to toe by the other paramedic.
We arrive at the hospital and Im taken to a regular room, and Sammy is taken to ICU. I don't like being separated from my brother, and as soon as I can, I'm going up to see him. I'm checked over by a doctor, and fitted with a big cast. I ask, "How's my brother doing?" The doctor replies, "He's stable. Still not conscious." I try to get up, but the doctor pushes me back down. I realize this doctor is actually a Leviathan and am overjoyed when a nurse calls her. She walks off, and I contemplate how the hell im gonna get to Sam. I've been given crutches and a wheelchair. I pick the wheelchair for faster speed and ease of access. I grab it and roll it over to my bed, then carefully get in it. I rip out my IV of morphine, and then wheel out of my room. I quickly find the elevator and get in. I smack the "2" button and whisper, "I'm coming, Sammy, then I'm gonna get you outta here." The door opens and I go through it, then roll down the hallway until I find room 221, Sam's room.
I find it after what seemed like forever, and am surprised to see he's conscious and talking to Bobby. He's still got an IV and oxygen, but he looks a lot better than the last time I saw him. He sees me at the door and gives me a signal to come in. Bobby knows our codes and signals, so he looks behind him and walks quickly over to me, wheeling me closer to my brother. "Dean!" Sam happily exclaims. "God, its good to hear your voice, Sammy. I was really worried in the ambulance." I smile and put my hand up on the side of Sam's bed. "Yeah, I was apparently unconscious when they brought me in." I sigh, "At least you're ok. You are ok, right?" Sam smiled and nodded, "Yeah, I think you got the worst end." I look down at my leg and laugh, "Eh, I'm all right." Bobby smiles at us and says, "What do you say I take y'all home to recover safely? In other words, we've gotta get the hell outta here before we become lunch." I agree quickly.
Bobby wheels me out and Sam, off the IVs, is feeling the full extent of his injuries. He clutches onto Bobby so tight I feel that if Bobby moves an inch, I fear Sam is just gonna fall over. We both make it out and Bobby sits Sam down on a bench, so he can go get the car. He leaves us, and returns three minutes later. Bobby gets my crutches from my room, and helps me get out of my wheelchair. I can use my crutches pretty well, and hop to the car. Bobby loads the wheelchair in the trunk and gets Sam to the car. We both sit in the back, and Bobby drives us to a hotel.
Once we arrive, Sam is feeling somewhat better but still needs to rest, as do I. Bobby opens my door, and asks me if I want my crutches or wheelchair. I say, "Wheelchair, please. If the room is handicap accessible." Bobby nods, and gets my chair and brings it over to my side of the car. I scoot myself into it and wait for Sam. Sam, after Bobby opens his door, slowly gets out and instead of grabbing Bobby, he holds onto his car and makes his way toward me. Once he reaches me, I smile and we go to our hotel room together, stopping every so often so Sam can regain his footing. "Sammy, you can hold onto my chair, you know." He nods, "I know. I'm ok, just in pain and can't really see that well right now. I sure do miss that morphine." I laugh, "You and me both, man."
We finally make it to the room and the first thing Sam does is sit on the couch forcefully. I bring myself over to the couch and climb out of my wheelchair, Sam has his hand out and I grab it. He pulls me up best he can. "Rough day, huh?" Sammy just scoffs, "Yeah, nothin like getting our asses kicked by Leviathan."
