Chapter Five: Well, That Was... Unexpected

I woke up early the next morning, and went to class as usual. We were all tense as I dressed in a formal outfit; everyone still believed I was going to meet with the Council, and had been instructed to wear fancy clothes; if I didn’t, it would look suspicious.

After looking through my wardrobe for what felt like hours, I settled on a more simple dress. The top part was a peachy tan, and the bottom was black. There was a gold belt that separated the two colors, and the strapless dress was very flattering on me.

“Chris told me that he’s pulling the alarm around the middle of second period,” Scarlett whispered. “We’ve packed everything for you, and Chris has it waiting for us. All four of us will be leaving, and he’ll get us to the woods where we’ll use a tracker spell to find the car.”

“Tracker spell?”

“You’ve got the power to do it, and Chris assured me that it was simple; don’t worry, alright?”

“Ok,” I muttered, but I was still a ball of nerves as we started to plan the details of our first candle that we would be making. Obviously, I was distracted, as I had more pressing matters.

Around a half hour into class, the class phone rang. I was so distracted with my thoughts, I didn’t notice. After the teacher talking in hushed tones for a few minutes, she turned to me.

“Go down to Headmistress’s office; they’re here.”

What? I mentally screamed. Headmistress had told me earlier that the Council would be coming around dinner time, not this early! Scarlett and I both tensed, looking desperately at one another.

“I love you,” I whispered in her ear as I hugged her, knowing that this would most likely be goodbye. She was silently crying as I stood up, put on a brave face, and walked straight out of the room. I didn’t look back, knowing if I did that I would fall apart all over again, and I had to hold it together; I couldn’t look weak in front of the Council, because if I did they could easily prey on that.

I got to her office, and before I could sit down, she instructed, “Go to the office across the hall; they’re waiting.”

“Ok,” I said. The only reason I wasn’t falling apart was that I was numbing myself to the reality that I was most likely going to die. If I thought about it, truly thought about it, I knew I would collapse into sobs on the ground.

I walked into the hall, and took a few deep breaths before I went in.

It looked like Headmistress’s office, except the desk was much larger and the Council was there. There were five in total, and something told me that not all of them were present.

“Taylor Savage, correct?” the center one asked, and I figured that he was in charge.

“Yes,” I got out, sitting down.

“There are twelve of us total, but only the five of us could make it today; therefore, we will be judging for what the next move to make is,” another one said.
