The bell rang indicating the start of the first class.
My mind was circling the thoughts of just leaving. I know I would probably get expelled and also get scolded by Aerinmus but I didn't need this class. In fact, I needed it the least. But the possibility of it playing back at myself made me stay in my seat and just sigh in defeat.
Not long after the bell someone older than us walked in. My best guesses were that it was our teacher. "Good morning students. My name is Mrs. Illugidottir, but you can just call me Astrid. I'm going to be your dragon care and psychology teacher and adviser. So if you have any questions about these topics you can always come to my open doors."
"Good morning!","Good morning...." we greeted her back. Some happy to be here and some, including me, not wanting to be here. I was the minority of course.
She continued, "Yesterday I saw the most of you fail a simple test. To be honest, I was very disappointed with this year's students. You set the highest records on how dumb you are. Please excuse my rudeness but you deserve it." She laughed to herself in disbelief. "Last year I had more brains present. That's why our first topic will be about feeding dragons."
Some groans were heard. I had my guesses that those were the no-brain heads.
She looked around the whole class with a strong gaze, "I hope to see an improvement with all of you in less than a month of learning. In the best case - just two weeks, since this is basic knowledge you should already know."
A hand rose from all behind of the class.
"Yes?", the teacher answered.
"Mrs. Illugidottir, will we learn during this course what that girl did yesterday?"
"Please. Astrid." She corrected the student with a smile. But her smile stayed on evident of the memory from yesterday. "Ah, yes. That miraculous girl. I was surprised to see someone with such rare capabilities. To answer your question - yes, but not this year. That is more advanced and I think that most of you won't even get the hang of it because not everyone has the gift to have a connection with dragons like that. We will try of course next year, but I can't promise you that you will be able to do it. Especially with the empty heads you have."
I heard the girl sight in disappointment.
"By the way, do you by any chance know where that girl is staying? I have been wanting to talk to her since yesterday." Astrid asked with interest lacing her voice.
"She's in our class right now." Another voice, much deeper and bored, spoke from the back. Is it just me or did I hear Bolverk?
"Oh really?" Her eyes sparkled. "Where are you Skur?"
I felt Aerinmus's eyes turn to me and I sighed lowly raising my arm. "Right here."
"May I speak with you after this lesson?" She asked me with a sweet voice.
"I guess.." I answered back disinterested. She was nice, yes, but I hated useless attention and that was exactly what she was giving me at this moment. Not from her of course, her words pull other's attention to me because they are jealous. "Oh my God, Can she just not do anything? I was supposed to be the honor student," is what they are probably thinking.
I like to shine but in my ways. Befriending a dragon is nothing much, so for me, that isn't exactly shining. Yesterday I did feel greater than others but now - I regret that feeling.

After the class, I waited for most of the students to empty the room so I could talk to Astrid, but to my disappointment, most stayed because our next lesson was also here, and to my notice, they were just too lazy to even pick up their butts. Ha! And they expect to ace this class being lazy.
I made my way to Astrid and cleared my throat quietly to announce my presence to her. "You wanted to speak with me?"
"Ah, yes! Skur, please come with me. It won't take long, I promise. I can't let you be late to the next class," she laughed.
Astrid went outside, me following her. She went to a door not so far away from the class and opened it mentioning for me to go in before her.
"Welcome to my so-called office," She waved her hand all around the room.
I was surprised. This room was beautifully decorated. One of the walls was covered in just pictures and the opposite wall was empty of furniture but the design on it – it had a drawn huge dragon there. Her wooden desk at the back had legs carved as little dragons. It all was just so mesmerizing for me.
"As you can see here," she walked over to the huge painting, "this is a dragon I used to own. He died guarding my life." A tear forced itself out of her eye. "And there," she pointed to the wall of pictures I was standing near-by, "are my most memorable memories of him and recorded achievements I have made thanks to him."
It was very touching and interesting what she was telling me but I still had an unanswered question in mind. "How is this connected to you wanting to talk to me?"
"You see Skur, yesterday when I saw you befriend a dragon with a single look, I was brought back to my old memories. The thing is, I saw myself in your actions. Everything I know about dragons I learned from my dragon, not books or so. And I know that you did the same because what you did can't be just learned. It comes from experience and deeper connections with dragons. I have never seen that power over dragons in anyone but myself."
"I expect to see a lot from you in the future," she added and reached out to give me a pendant.
