Chapter 6

Meg-Elaine

"Are you ready?" Vlain nods at Iz's question and everyone tenses in anticipation. "Okay, first without then with daggers." She gets a kind of gleeful/menacing glint in her eyes when she mentions the daggers and I have to repress a grin. She loves her daggers just as much as I love my sword: way too much.

The whole reason they're even doing this is Rob; everyone wanted him to know what his 'sister' is capable of, and this seemed like the easiest solution. The living room floor is cleared, just like during every sparring practice, and everyone sits in their usual spots as Iz and Vlain face off, Rob sitting next to me and Eli, Em's ferret in his lap as she tries to calm his nerves. He was adamantly against this, but he's powerless to stop it, even with his new vampire strength and speed.

Iz finally decides to strike first and I watch his face as she lunges. The whole fight couldn't have lasted more than a minute or so, the whole time his face keeping a look of concern while shifting through panic, then surprise, and finally awe as she pins Vlain in a neck lock. I can tell he's having a hard time believing that she just beat a who-knows-how-old vampire in a matter of seconds- without weapons- and if I'd never seen what she was capable of I would be the same way.

That fight over and won, they both walk over to me to receive their steel daggers. Rob can't help but shoot her a last futile glance, begging her to give up and stop this madness. She just smiles at him and pats his shoulder before turning back to her opponent. He sighs, finally seeming to realize there's nothing he can do, and pays attention to them as they circle each other. This fight lasts a while longer, nearly five minutes (give or take), and there isn't as much concern evident in his expression as before. He seems to be starting to understand just how powerful and capable she really is.

Eli hoots and I turn back to the fight just as Iz pins Vlain beneath her, her dagger lodged into the soft spot under his chin. He better be grateful it's only steel and unable to pierce vampire skin, otherwise he'd be in a nasty predicament.

Not that Iz would ever purposefully hurt him... it's just that, sometimes, her strength escapes her and she's a little more forceful than she thinks she is. Not that anyone would tell her, she's nearly gotten her abilities under perfect control and no one wants to spook her.

After helping Vlain stand, I walk back over to Meg and give her the daggers, strapping my own into the sheath on my waist and being instantly reassured by the comforting weight. After I finish adjusting the strap and making sure both daggers are secure, I turn to Rob and laugh at his bewildered expression. "What?"

All he can do is shake his head as he stutters cutely, "I just... you."

I burst out laughing again and start doing a random little dance as I singsong, "yeah! I know! I'm awesome!" By now everyone's laughing along with us and I don't feel like such a freak. Realizing something, I stop mid-flail and look at him, now completely serious. "You must be hungry."

He doesn't seem to have realized it until I mention it, but when I do he starts looking around uncomfortably. He opens his mouth to say something and I smile as I point to my fangs, "your fangs are out." He looks to me in shock as he fingers their tips and I pull him up off the couch and towards the door.

Eli hops up and starts after us, Wallace and Kate right behind him, "woo! Hunting trip!" I turn just in time to see him pump his fist in the air and I shake my head at him. His smile falls as he looks at me confusedly. "What?"

How to put this? "It's just... this is his first hunt and we'll be hunting animals and I just... don't want anything happening." Luckily he knows what I mean and nods, signaling the others to go sit back down.

I don't know how Rob'll react to hunting and I don't want him to, for whatever reason, think that they're pray. I would never tell him this, afraid that it'll freak him out and he won't want to hunt, even though he desperately needs to, so I don't. We make it outside and I breathe in the fresh air as he looks to me expectantly, a gleam of anticipation in his eyes.

I smile at him, not bothering to hide my fangs anymore, and start to run towards the forest, knowing he's right on my heels.
