Chapter 32

Isadora

After we say goodbye to Seth, Royce starts to lead me back towards the door we came in through but then at the last second veers us towards and through the door right next to it. Just before it closes behind me I can just hear Seth whisper "oh no." What does that mean?!

Instantly on guard, I don't even jump when the lights are suddenly turned off, leaving me alone with Royce in an empty room. He probably thinks he's taken away my sight- but oh is he wrong. With the small amount of light seeping around the door I can see everything perfectly (even though there's only two things: Royce and a rather large, completely empty room).

I watch as he attempts to circle me, internally laughing at the fact he thinks he's being sneaky, and brace myself when he finally speaks.

"I must admit, it's admirable what you're trying to accomplish. Don't get me wrong, I'm amused that you thought it would work, but nevertheless I'm impressed by your dedication to your friends.

"I have people that keep me informed, you know. When I was informed that that girl... Kate, is that her name? When I was informed she was one of your friends I knew you'd come to try to rescue her. That's probably the only reason she's still alive; I knew you wouldn't come near me if you knew her to be dead."

"I don't know what you mean; I came here for you, not her." All of a sudden I can feel as he steps closer to me, his finger slowly sliding down my arm. I wrench my arm away, twirl to face him with pure disgust radiating off of me. "Not like that and you know it."

He steps away again, continuing to circle me disconcertingly, and chuckles, "my my, what a temper. Anyway- don't try to lie to me, I saw the look of hope in her eyes, the way that Hunter looked at you like she knew what was going on. It's funny that you think your friends will survive this. They won't."

And with that he lunges.

Once I hear the Whitecoat leave I turn as far as I can towards Seth. "What do you mean, 'oh no'?"

He turns to me, a look of fear in his eyes, and wrings his hands as he answers, "well, you see... that room... it's kind of the... execution room."

"WHAT?!" How could he have let her go in there alone with Royce?! My heart's beating about a mile a minute in panic but it slowly calms down once I realize Seth couldn't have stopped it even if he'd wanted to, not without blowing his cover.

Eli speaks from next to me and I look over, taking his worried expression that probably matches my own. "If he's on to her, do you think...?"

"That you're next? Yes." Usually I appreciate bluntness, but right now? Not so much. He thinks a moment and then glances around the room to make sure that, indeed, we are alone. He comes over to Ra and loosely unfastens his restraints, repeating the process with everyone down the line. It looks like we're still restrained but if we tried just a little we could easily free ourselves.

He stays a few more minutes, looking over what I presume are our charts just in case anyone comes in, and we just sit silently in anticipation. Finally he gets up from where he was sitting at Kate's feet (she hasn't made a peep since she saw Iz, just staring at the ceiling, and I can only guess she's in shock. I can't blame her. If I didn't know what was going on and I saw a friend of mine look at me with that hauntingly emotionless look, I'm pretty sure I'd freak too), replacing her chart and walking towards the door.

He opens it but before he can step through he's pushed farther inside by the same brutes from earlier. They eye us all with what I can only call anticipation, smirks on their faces, and they step towards us slowly, purposely trying to freak us out.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not intimidated. Instead I'm almost calm, internally calculating how long it'll take them to reach us, their various exploitable weak spots, and how to use their size against them.

Bring it on.
