Chapter 14
Isadora
We park on the next block over, knowing that nothing'll happen to the car because Dimca's men constantly patrol around here, and we all follow Lin towards the warehouse. Listening carefully, I'm able to recognize the echoing sounds of our feet against the walls of the buildings around us, instinctively knowing we're in the right place even if Lin didn't say so.
Lin has us stand just around the corner as he walks up and knocks on the door. I peek around the corner and watch as Hank answers the door. I groan, silently cursing our bad luck. Why, out of all the guys in all the teams, did it have to be Hank? He's most likely not going to let us in (at least not willingly, I'll beat him up if I have to. Which, of course, would totally ruin our element of surprise).
Much to my surprise he greets Lin with a smile, asking how he's been. This is by far the most amicable I've ever seen him. Is it just me that he hates or is it that he's just feeling friendly today? Lin answers and they continue their small talk for a minute before Lin gets to the point. "Are Dimca and Jan in?"
He nods, "yeah. Do you want me to tell them you're here?" With this he reaches towards the walky-talky on his shoulder and I start to panic.
Lin flails his arms towards him exclaiming that that isn't necessary, that they're expecting him (LIES! And here I was thinking Lin didn't like lying). Hank nods, waving him through, and Lin waves to us to come over. Hank looks put off, as if not appreciating the lack of knowledge about us, and when he sees me he scowls, quickly hiding it with a smirk.
"Why, if it isn't the Little Girlie. I haven't seen you in a while, what have you been up to, playing with dolls?" He seems almost proud of himself for his tiny brain being able to come up with that and I just shrug it off, completely accepting the fact that, apparently, it really is just me that he hates.
Meg, on the other hand, appears to take great insult at this on my behalf. "How dare you speak to her like that?! Do you have any idea who you're talking to?"
As Hank stares at Meg, taken off guard by her sudden outburst, I palm one of my daggers. His attention comes back to me, the smirk back in place... and quickly disappearing once he watches me twirl it between my fingers effortlessly.
"I would suggest staying as close to my good side as you possibly can, Hank. It's been nearly a year and you have no idea what I'm capable of. So unless you want an even bloodier repeat of what happened last time you challenged me, I suggest you back off." My voice dripping with unrestrained venom, I flick the dagger over his shoulder and watch as it nearly blurs across the room, sinking itself deep into the exact center of the forehead of one of the practice dummies against the far wall next to the door leading to the hallway.
I take in his reaction snugly, watching as his Adam's apple bobs violently as he swallows in fear, his heat rate slightly rising as he realizes what a threat I might be. It's easier to hear human heart beats for some reason (I've never been able to figure out why, it just is). He slowly turns back to me, barely managing to mask his surprise, and I smirk up at him.
"You gonna let us through?" I tilt my head, daring him to refuse, and nod as he shakes his head and steps aside out of the doorway.
We all walk inside, Meg giving him a dirty look as she passes him, and I lead everyone across the room and down the hall, making everyone stop right in front of the door I remember to be Jan's sitting room. If she's anywhere in the building it's most likely here. Maybe Dimca'll be in there too, stopping us from having to search him out next.
In a burst of courage I pull the door wide open, nearly ripping it from the frame in my exuberance, and take in both of their shocked faces. Good, they're both here. Dimca is the first to recover, smiling at me warmly, but Jan has the funniest reaction. She screeches in joy, jumping to her feet and knocking their chess game off the table with her full skirts, before enveloping me in a crushing hug.
She's much shorter than I am, only being sixteen when she was turned, and I pick her up off the floor, swinging her around until she squeals with laughter.
It's good to be back.
