Chapter 34

Meg-Elaine

I watch as they come closer, anticipation tensing my muscles. One of them, a bald behemoth, comes up next to me and reaches towards my neck. "Really? Do you really think I'm just going to let you strangle me?"

He takes a step back in surprise and I use that to my advantage, grabbing his still-outstretched hand and swinging myself onto his back, locking his head in my elbow as I slowly cut off his air supply. His neck is too thick with muscle for me to attempt to just snap it, and I hate to kill him slowly, but with no weapons I don't really have a choice.

He scratches and pulls at my arms viciously, making me tear up in repressed pain, and he backs up to the wall, slamming me into it backwards. Through all of this I somehow, miraculously, manage to hold on, gradually tightening my grip until I feel him start to relax. Just as I think he's about to collapse something pricks my arm (something far too small to be his fingernails) and I look around his head to see what appears to be some sort of tranquilizer dart.

Just as before everything starts to go fuzzy and just as I lose consciousness I feel myself rushing towards the floor, the man lying prone beneath me.

"What on earth is happening out here? Never mind- stupid question." I'm actually rather surprised by the fact that I'm surprised by the scene I opened the door to. I know that doesn't make much sense but it's the truth. Everyone's kind of clustered amongst the tables, Kate and Ra hugging each other, and they all look to me when they hear the door open. Literally every one; including the small horde of muscle-bound human giants known as the guards.

I glance over everyone and realize Meg's missing. Lin sees me looking and nods towards the wall beside me, pointing out Meg's unconscious form slumped over one of the humans, also knocked out. Huh, I wonder what happened there. I suppose it doesn't really matter, I can see her breathing so she'll be fine.

I turn back to the humans who have started towards my friends again, syringes in hand (where did those come from? They didn't have them a second ago), "hey, you Hulks, your boss is dead. Go be free or whatever before I have to hurt you." 

I gesture towards the door with my blood soaked hand and the guards pale slightly, looking between me and it, before just staring at me in stunned surprise. "If you don't believe me go take a look for yourselves." One of them actually does, returning out of the room a second later with a slight green-around-the-gills look. "So?" The human whispers to his buddies that Royce really is dead and they all stand there another moment before bolting out the door on the far side of the room behind them.

I stare after them for a second, surprised they would actually just run away, and feel arms wrap around my stomach, pick me up, and spin me. Giggling, I just barely manage to wriggle out of Lin's clutches, placing a quick kiss on his lips before turning back to everyone.

I spot Kate, Ra's arms around her shoulders as she holds his hands, and I can feel tears start to well up in my eyes. In a second we're in each other's arms, crying quietly in overwhelmed relief. She pulls back first and looks at me, "I thought... you were... you looked so..."

"Shhh. I know. I had to, Royce was suspicious enough just seeing your reaction, I couldn't show any familiarity. He would have killed you... wait, never mind, he tried that anyway." She gives a little giggle and we hug again, everyone else (but Meg, who's still out) wrapping their arms around us and making so that we can barely breathe, not that we care.

Deciding to come back later for whatever research data Paul might be interested in, Eli grabs Meg and everyone piles into the van they rode in on the way here, Lin driving us back to the warehouse. There's one thing we got out of all this; a vehicle that actually fits us all comfortably.
