Chapter 22

Isadora

Once he finally pulls his eyes from her he sticks out his hand and waits for me to take it. I do without hesitance, noticing he has a very strong grip (which makes sense, considering his well-defined muscles. After getting a whiff of him I can also tell he's a Shifter, so there's that aspect too). "Nice to finally meet you. Kate's told me a lot about you. My name is Hedran Smith, and I'm an Arctic Fox. Which, really, I've always found funny considering my parents are both Jamaican."

He's right, that is really funny.

"I'm Isadora St. Corvus, and if you don't mind me asking, how did you two meet?"

Kate steps forward and answers instead, "we met at the bar the first time we went to V Amps." We've gone back pretty much every other night since, so they've had plenty of time to hang out there. Good for her, I'm glad she's finally met someone. He seems nice (from the whole minute I've known him), and he's a Shifter so I don't have to worry about keeping everything secret.

But then again, I realize it's probably too late for that anyway, considering he's here at fighting practice.

We sit and watch Lin and Eli continue to hit and dodge on the mats in silence, and I turn to him once I get an idea. "Hedran, can you fight?"

He shakes his head, "I can fist fight well, but nothing like that," he gestures to where Eli's just caught Lin in a neck lock, winning the round, "and please, call me Ra. My name is weird, plus I've always liked the Egyptian gods."

"Really? Do you have a favorite?" I can't help but get excited, I don't think anyone's readily admitted that to me before. When I was little I used to be obsessed with Egypt.

"Yeah. Horus. I've always liked falcons."

"Mine's Anubis. He had something to do with mummies, which I've always found fascinating. It's kind of funny; the Egyptians mummified so that their rulers could be immortal, and here we are, surrounded by immortal vampires."

He and Kate take this in, both chuckling as they realize how right I am. Kate pipes up for the first time in this conversation and we both turn to her as the guys walk over. "My favorite is Bastet. I read a book about her once, I don't remember much, but she sounded cool. It's kind of funny- she's a cat but I'm a dog person (which, by the way, has very little to do with my Wolf)."

I can relate. "Yeah, that's like me. Anubis is a jackal, but I'm a total cat person." Eli hears this and walks over, purring at me affectionately and earning a weirded out (yet slightly amused) look from Meg. What? It's not my fault he's a Tiger with a strange sense of humor. He fits in well!

I bounce to my feet and turn, taking in everyone's surprised faces as they all stop talking at my outburst. "Okay, who's going to see how good Ra is?" Everyone knows what I mean and they look around at each other, trying to decide who it'll be. Kate doesn't look too happy, but she knows why we have to do this. Ra, on the other hand (every time I hear his name I can't help but almost smile, like when we met Mrs. Remus) is excited, probably eager to prove himself to us. He should be, we won't let some weakling date Kate. Not that we could really have any say anyway, but we are kind of her family (at least I like to think we are).

"I'll do it." We all swivel our heads towards the small voice, but I instantly know who's it is. Janet takes in our shock (everyone's but Dimca's, he just stands next to her looking proud) and shrugs. "What? Despite what you all think, I can fight. Dimca likes to keep me sequestered here but that doesn't mean he hasn't taught me to defend myself."
