Chapter 30

Meg-Elaine

As soon as we arrive two burly humans appear to 'greet' us, also known as grunting and then roughly shoving us towards to doors that supposedly, hopefully, lead to where Kate's being held. Everyone knows the plan and acts like the dejected, betrayed people we're supposed to be. When one of the men shoves me, however, Eli breaks character (or perhaps not) and growls at him threateningly.

I can't help but gasp as my fiance is bludgeoned over the head with the man's fist. Eli sways briefly, apparently actually affected by the hit, and I hurry the few steps forward and catch him as he loses his balance, barely managing to support his weight as he composes himself.

We're ushered inside and I can't help but stare at the hospital-like room before us. The walls are all white, the floors white tile, and there are exam tables set up against one wall, closed doors on the wall across from them. As soon as we're all in the door closes with a boom behind us and I involuntarily flinch in surprise. Four other humans, all in the customary white lab coats, come towards us with syringes in their hands.

I can feel as everyone starts to panic- this is definitely not part of the plan- and everyone in front of me (Lin, Ra, and Romulus) try to turn back to the door, but are stopped in their tracks by more muscle-bound behemoths that grab each of them by their arms and hold them as the 'doctors' come forward quickly and inject whatever's in the syringes into their necks.

Trying to get to them, both to attack the Whitecoats and to try to save my friends, I'm caught by the man that hit Eli, Eli himself caught by the other man from outside. Before I know what's happening and while I'm still internally freaking out about being restrained, I've already been injected by whatever it is.

As my mind slowly goes fuzzy and my eyesight starts to blur all I can think is: this is not part of the plan. This should not be happening. This was not part of the plan.
.

Opening my eyes, I groan as I'm blinded and slowly blink, trying to adjust to the light of the stark whiteness all around me. I try to rub my eyes but my arms won't move. My whole body can't move. It takes me a second to realize that I'm strapped to something flat (a gurney, probably) and that the glaring white is one of the ceiling lights.

Turning my head as far as I can, I spot Ra on one side and Eli on my other. Eli's looking around also and when our eyes meet I can't help but smile. Even though we're in this sucky situation, at least we're together.

Man, when exactly did I become such a sap?! I remember back when most of my time and brain power was reserved for killing vampires and all this (I mentally flail my hands in exasperation) emotional mushy stuff was avoided whenever possible.

As if sensing that we're awake, one of the Whitecoats comes over and... writes something on a clipboard? I can hear a pencil scratching against paper, so I assume so, but it's just below my line of sight so I can't be sure.

Just as she's walking away I faintly hear a door open and footsteps approach her, a familiar voice asking how we've settled. Seth. Does that mean that Iz is with Royce? Is she okay? I haven't heard any alarms or anything (during the brief few minutes that I've been awake) so I can only hope she's okay.

"So far all of their vital readings are good. Everything's stable and the rest should be coming out of sedation soon. I have a few questions I was hoping you could clear up, you did come in with them, correct? This one here," I can almost sense her pointing towards me and my skin starts to crawl, "do you know what she is? Her blood tests came back as human, but I find that unlikely. Why would we bother with a human, after all?"

Hello people, I'm right here! I can answer for myself, you know. Although, considering that I don't know how my body's reacting to the sedatives, I could say I'm a unicorn for all I know.

"She is human, for the most part, but so much more than that. She's a Hunter, a genetically advanced human. As you know they have better reflexes and healing abilities than their inferior human counterparts."

"Truly? Hunters are rare; she'll be a great addition to our research!" I can hear the awe in her voice and I can't help but be a little smug. That's right, bask in my awesomeness!

Although I don't like being reminded that we're all stuck here until Iz can save us (which was totally not part of the plan. We were supposed to take out everyone down here and get Kate while she took care of Royce, and now it looks like she'll have to do everything.) I know she can, probably relatively easily for her, but I hate having to be in a position where I need her to save me.
