Chapter 28
Isadora
Taking a deep breath, I try to steel myself for what I'm about to do. This'll be the ultimate test of my nonexistent acting skills. Heck, I was barely able to convince Mrs. Bedevere I didn't steal the last cookie when I was little.
Staring out the window, I try to focus on the scenery as it whizzes past, trying to pick out any familiar land marks as I try to focus past my jumbled thoughts.
It's been a few days since I captured Seth (that poor, emaciated man), and once he regained consciousness we found out that he's actually a pretty cool guy. Apparently he'd never approved of Royce's practices ever since he started working for him when he was in his teens. He'd needed money and it was quick cash... until Royce blackmailed him into working for him permanently. He'd been on one of his few days off when I'd caught him.
He'd been the one taking care of Kate in between experimentation sessions and he'd taken pity on her, slipping her part of his meager rations (which can partially explain how gaunt he is). When Winna heard of his she went into 'hyper mother mode' stuffing him to the gills with food every chance that she could.
As he slowly started to gain some much-needed weight, we slowly came up with a plausible plan to rescue Kate, Seth being promised that he'd never have to work for him after we pull it off. I only promised that because there's no possibility Royce can survive what I have in store for him. Seth explained what Royce is (something Paul was eager to learn, given his scientist mind), and from what he described it sounds like... he's a Corvus.
I'd become ecstatic when I'd made the connection- I'm not truly the last Corvus. That bubble, unfortunately, was burst when Seth explained that he has a different last name. Which basically only means that his family were Corvus' before they spit off who-knows-how-many-hundreds of years ago. But still. We can use this to our advantage. I'd been as strong as he apparently is before the... Henry incident- meaning I could easily overtake him if given that chance.
Now, if all goes according to plan, I'm going to get that chance.
Lin, Meg, and the older Shifters (including Ra, much to my annoyance, but he refused to give up the chance to help Kate) are all going to be 'offerings' from me for him to experiment on, thus giving them a chance to get closer to Kate and disable any security there might be. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to work my way into Royce's good graces and hopefully get him to lower his guard enough for me to quickly kill him.
It sounds so easy in my mind but there are just so many things that can go wrong. Everything has to be timed and played out perfectly. There's no room for human error. Not now.
Praying for a billion things (but mostly that this'll all play out right and that none of us will be injured) I don't realize the car's stopped until Seth clears his throat, startling me back to our dreaded reality. We're in front of what appears to be a slightly run down farmhouse surrounded by overgrown fields. Despite its appearance Seth says inside it's all high tech.
The delivery van, packed with the bound 'offerings' (also known as my friends and husband), pulls up beside us and they all pile out, the practiced frightened glowers on their faces as they 'try to escape' their connected handcuffs.
Show time.
