Chapter 12

Meg-Elaine

"Okay, here's what's going on. Rob has to go back to New York, like, immediately, so we're going to fly him home and then come back." Iz explains this from where she sits between Lin and Rob and I can feel excitement bubbling in my chest. I've always wanted to go to America.

Just as I'm letting myself get hopeful Romulus speaks for the first time in a month, surprising everyone so that we all can do nothing but stare at him in shock. "So you're just going to leave us, or are we coming with you? Your use of plurals was kind of... vague."

Replaying what she said I realize he's right, "we" could mean only Iz and Lin, or it could mean everyone. Heaven knows we all fit in his jet.

Lin finally shakes himself out of his surprise and answers, looking slightly guilty as he does. "Actually... I was planning on dropping you all back off at Vlain's. But if you all want to come... I don't see why not." I barely register his look to Iz, as if asking for permission, and her nod in return, because I'm too busy wriggling in my spot in anticipation. Eli notices and chuckles, wrapping an arm around my waist to try to calm me.

Snuggling against his side, I start to drift off to sleep, my excitement slowly tapering off into drowsiness as I hear Lin say that we leave in the morning.

.
I'm woken with a jolt and my eyes fly open, taking in the car's interior packed with people. "Sorry. Pothole." Lin's voice drifts back to us and I shift, freeing my arm from between my body and the door, and rub my eyes while I yawn.

Lin's driving and Romulus has shotgun. Kate and Wallace are sitting beside me, Em curled around her shoulders and Brad's Wolf draped across both of their laps. Where are Eli, Rob, and Iz?

"Did you sleep well?" I jump a little at the deep voice right next to my ear, and turn to see Eli smiling at me. Well that answers part of my question. Suddenly I realize why I'm so comfortable: I'm sitting on his lap! Everyone in the back seat takes in my surprise at my realization and chuckle as I blush furiously. Trying to cover my face, I turn and burrow my face in his neck, breathing in his smell as I try to calm myself.

Once I regain my composure I ask where we are. "On our way to the airport. We should be there in little less than an hour, provided we don't hit too much traffic." Lin answers from the front and I nod, looking out the window. We're still in the middle of nowhere but some signs of civilization have started to appear; clumps of houses too small to be deemed towns, a few more farms, and more cars.

"Where's Iz and Rob?"

Lin answers again, this time sounding slightly frustrated. "On the roof." Oh, that explains his annoyance. Ever since she fell off the roof he hasn't let her do it. I can still remember her excited laughter as she was buffeted by the wind, how she managed to startle the living daylights out of me by sticking her head in the window, and last but not least, how mangled her body looked as she lied unconscious on the asphalt.

He confided in me that he's been terrified that that'll happen to her again and, honestly, I can't blame him. After Eli nearly died from being bitten, I completely understand what he was going through.

The only way I imagine that he'd let her do it now is if he was going the speed limit or below instead of maxing the speedometer like last time. I look around his seat and see that, indeed, he is going five miles below the limit. No wonder it's taking us so long to get there.

I can only imagine how Rob must be doing up there. He's probably laughing his head off with her, they seem to have a similar dare-devilish tendency. I can't hear them if they are, however, because all the windows are up and the air conditioner is on.

A yawn escapes me and my body bounces as Eli chuckles. "You can go back to sleep. I'll wake you when we get there." My body decides to take him up on his offer without consulting with me first and I find my eyes dropping within twenty seconds. I snuggle against his chest, relishing in his body heat as I drift off.
