Sans, adored his brother Papyrus and began learning more defensive type magic to protect him from danger. Papyrus, also learned from Sans, developing enhancement type magic to boost his own skills and looked up to Sans like the big brother he was. Gaster frowned a bit, realizing this had proved to make the experiment more difficult. When separated, both would cry for hours and use their new skills to get to each other. So, Gaster kept the two together to refrain from any unnecessary casualties to occur through self harm.
