The taxi ride that night with Billy and Veronica was awkward, Chuck got mad and walked out after finding out that Billy was my stepbrother.

In taxi, Billy didn't say anything to Veronica or me. He sat in the front, and the two of us on the back seat.

When we got home, he went to his room, he was angry so he slammed his door so loud. I wanted to talk to him, but I thought it best to leave him alone.

When I woke up on Saturday morning, Billy had already gone out and spent all day in out.

Along with me at the kitchen table on my high chair, my mother was sitting. "Do you want me to tell me what happened last night? Cop called us and said that Billy was involved in a fight in Pop's and that you were with him?"

I put down my coffee. "We had dinner...Billy, Veronica, me and Chuck, a guy from school. Billy and he fought. We don't know how the fight started because this happened when Veronica and I were in the toilet. I really don't know much more than you do."

"Your stepfather's ears smoke from anger, and I don't know what to do."

"He just have to forget about it. Guys sometimes get into fights, and maybe Billy's not guilty. You have to explain that to him."

"When it's about Billy, you can't talk to him. I don't understand that."

"Neither do I."

I decided to talk with Billy tonight and wait all day for him to come home. He said that around 6PM he would come back home, but he didn't come at all.

I couldn't sleep and I was afraid.
About midnight I finally heard the steps and how the doors of Billy's room were gently opened.

At least he arrived home. I later heard his door opening with a shake.

"What the fuck is wrong with you, Billy? You smell on alcohol.", I heard my stepfather yelling.

I jumped out of the and put my ear on the wall.

"Hi, dad.", Billy murmured disrespectfully.

"You always give me reasons to be proud of you. First you begin to fight and humiliate me in front of everyone in this town, and now you have the guts to enter my house drunk? Well, you'll wish you never came back home."

"Really? What are you gonna do? Hit me? It wouldn't be your first time."

"You're a mistake, Billy."

"Tell me something I haven't heard before."

"All right, I have news for you. I won't pay for your college. You're on your own now. That's what I decided tonight. The money I would give you, I'll give Betty now.", he continued. "I'm not going to spend the hard earned money on a dumb shit like you. If one day you decide you want a real career, come talk to me. And till then I won't spend a penny on you."

"You never meant to pay for my college and you know that."

"Why would I want to...for someone who was nothing but disappoint from the day he was born?"

"It was the beginning, wasn't it...the day I was born? I never had a chance, right? Because mom didn't abort as you asked her to do."

"That's a fucking lie. Did she tell you that?"

"Even if she didn't tell me, I would have guessed.", then I heard a hard slap.

I was terrified. I could no longer stand by the side and listen to him beating him. I ran into the room and was even more terrified when I saw my stepfather hitting Billy.

"Stop it! Please stop!"

My stepfather turned around and looked at me without understanding. At that moment the man in front of me was a complete stranger.

"He's your son. Your son! I don't care what you think he did to deserve this, but nothing can ever be a justification for doing this to your child."

"Betty, get out! This isn't any of your business...", he started.

"It is my business, because you live with us now and I won't stand here and allow you to abuse him like this."

None of them said anything. There was silence in the room. It seemed that Billy's breathing calmed down.

"You have to get out."

"Betty..."

"Get out!", I screamed from the top of my lungs.

He shook his head and walked out of the room leaving me alone with Billy, who still sat on the bed in the same position.

I ran into my room and brought a bottle of water, and it brought to his lips.

"Drink this.", he drank everything out of the bottle at once, then squeezed the plastic bottle and threw it away.

I kneeled down and pulled off his shoes. He was drunk, murmuring something I didn't understand.

I got up and pulled the blanket off the bed. "Lie down."

He took off his jacket, threw it awkwardly on the floor and put his head down to the pillow and closed his eyes. I was sitting by his bed, still shaken up at what I saw.

I was very sorry for Billy and I was ashamed of my stepfather. I knew that tomorrow I had to talk to my mother.

How didn't she hear what was happening and how didn't she stopped it?

Billy's breathing soften. He fell asleep. I touched his silky dirty-blond hair, enjoying the opportunity to touch him without his knowledge.

With my fingers, I swirled over the cuts on the lips he got from his father.

Now it was much clearer to me why he was constantly angry, but I still thought that I didn't know anything about Billy's life.

He looked so innocent. As there was no smirk or angry expression, it was easier to see the boy behind him crying through the rough exterior - the same boy, I realized now who was ruined by a man married to my mother.

One tear fell down my face as I covered him with a blanket, and then I got out of the room. Returning to my bed, I was thinking of the irony that this guy, who has always tried to frighten me and sent me away, is the only person I want to protect.

When I woke up the next morning, my stepfather and my mother had already traveled to the western part of the state, where they would be.

My mom left a message in the kitchen. 'Your stepfather surprised me early this morning by a prematurely gifted birthday present. He already packed everything in the car before I woke up! I didn't want to wake you up. We'll only stay one night and return on Monday. There is enough food in the fridge for you and Billy. Call me on the phone if you need something.
I love you.'

That's nice. I was sure that my stepfather organized this so he didn't have to face the events of the previous night.

I immediately took my phone and sent her a text: 'Enjoy the trip, but when you come back, we have to seriously talk about what's happening between Billy and his father.'
