Shortly after getting to know him, Kai and I started hanging out frequently. After school, before school, at lunch – whenever we were free. My parents are hardly home because of their business trips, and I sought his company. Kai’s parents lived overseas and sent him to Korea for his studies, so he lived with his older cousin. On the days I couldn’t go to see him, my day felt dull and black and white. I never realized how boring my life was. Now, I can’t go a day without him.
When he asked me out, I thought I would die. My heart had never pumped so hard. But now, I see that it wasn’t the wrong choice to say yes.
I remember it so well, the day he asked me.
~Flashback~
It had almost been 5 months since I had met Kai, and each day we were with each other made my head spin and made me feel giddy with joy. My heart would thump every time he looked at me with his dark brown eyes, and every hug he gave made me want to hold him and never let go. Before he left at the end of lunch time, he told me “I’m not going to be at school tomorrow, but I’ll pick you up Saturday afternoon. Game?” And as always, I couldn’t help but grin and say “Yes. Of course!”
Well, Saturday came, and I was woken from my nap by the raucous my phone was making. I pick it up, and find 5 messages from Kai.
Get ready. I’m picking you up soon
-2:30pm
Did you get my last text..?
-3:10pm
I’m leaving my house
-3:30pm
Are you ready?
-3:40pm
TJ??? I’m outside
-4:00pm
The last text was from 4:00. What was the time?
“Oh s***!!” It’s already 4:10! I scramble out of bed and sprint down the stairs. I see a silhouette outside the front door, and curse.
“TJ! Don’t curse!”
“Sorry mum!”
Breathless, I open the door and Kai spins around. His mouth widens into a massive grin, and he laughs.
“Gee, are you sure you want to wear that? We aren’t going to be at my house.” I look down and realize I’m still wearing a hello kitty tank top and Spongebob Squarepants shorts.
“It’s not my day, today.” I groan. “Come in. I’ll get dressed quickly.” I leave the door open for Kai to follow, and jog up the stairs. I grab my jeans, a blouse and a jacket. Conscious of the fact that Kai would be alone with my mother, I straighten myself out as quick as possible, and then run down the stairs again.
“I’m ready!” I call out.
“Thank you for the permission Mrs Jae. I’ll make sure TJ is back on time.” I hear Kai say.
“Take care of her. Have fun!” My mother replies. I cringe internally, and grab my shoes quickly. As Kai leaves the living room, I grab his arm, usher him out of the house, say bye to my mum and slam the door behind us.
I put my shoes on properly as Kai waits patiently. When I’m ready, we start walking.
“So.. where are we going?” I ask
“Somewhere awesome.” Kai replies. I know he won’t tell me, even if I beg, so I shut up and just wait and see. We cross a busy intersection, joking around and laughing, and then we reach the mall.
Kai smiles at me and we both walk in. It’s packed like usual, and people are everywhere. Before I have anytime to wonder about what was going on, Kai grabbed my arm and drags me to the arcade.
We played every game there was, and ended up staying there until they kicked us out. By that time, both of us were starving, so we headed to the food court. We order hot dogs, and then Kai leads me outside.
“Waaaahh it’s so dark!” I say, amazed.
“We spent so much time in the arcade. But now, I have a special place I want to show you.” Kai replies. I look at him, but don’t question him. I just follow.
We eventually stop walking, and we’re on top of a small hill that overlooks the town. There is a railing, to stop people from doing dangerous things, and we walk to it. I lean on it, and we watch the lights of the buildings and houses in silence. And then Kai spoke.
“I-I don’t know how you feel, but for me, the past few months have been the best I’ve ever had. And I want it to keep going. So, will you go out with me, TJ?” I turn to look at him, heart in my mouth. My mind goes fuzzy, and I don’t really know what to do. But I manage to smile, and say a timid “yeah”. He grinned, and took out a small box from his pocket. He handed it to me.
“Im glad you said yes. This is why I wasn’t at school yesterday.” I open it and find a pair of earrings with the same design as his ring. I can’t wipe the smile off my face, and I look up at him.
“I-I….” I’m lost for words, but we don’t need words. Kai just steps forward and hugs me tight.
~End of flashback~
I close my locker, and sling my bag on my shoulder. I am definitely glad to be out this drab house. As I walk to the school gates, it seems like there are couples that litter the whole yard. They were everywhere, and all were at varying stages of PDA. I don’t want to stay here any longer than I have to. So I speed up my pace, and am finally on my way to the pond.
The pond isn’t anything special –it’s a small pond that has a family of ducks living near it. It’s a nice area, with a few trees here and there and a couple of benches on the water’s edge. A perfect hideaway. It was behind the large oval of the park, shielded from view by the gazebo in the center.
As I near the large oval, I see a figure dart behind the gazebo. I know who it is, and with an excited grin, I run towards him. My shoes sink into the soft earth, and I cant run as fast as I would like to, but I reach the gazebo anyway. I follow the path, that curves around and leads to the back, and as I turn the corner, I see something I probably wasn’t meant to.
That bronze skin is unmistakable, and so is the hair. The only thing different, was the blonde haired bimbo who he was sucking face with.
