My mom stormed into my bedroom and opened the closet door. I looked over annoyed because it’s just another Monday where I go to a depressing public school that has the name of a winner, but a graduation rate of total losers. At a snail’s pace, I got out of the bed that gives me pleasure. My mom is going through my closet franticly.
“Don’t you own a single bright color?” asked Mom. Bright colors annoyed me, they made me standout like a highlighter. They made me feel desperate for someone to notice me for the first time in high school and say something like “I love your outfit” or “We should hangout sometime because you standout”. I rolled my eyes.
“I have some colors.” I said pointing to the sections of white, dark red and dark pink.
“Why not try yellow or green?” asked Mom. I pulled out a black top with forest green stripes.
“I’m not a banana and this has green.” I snapped. Mom crossed her.
“Rose, do you know what day it is?” asked Mom. I knew it was Monday because yesterday I was at my friend Baylee and Spinner’s house dying my hair there because I’m not allowed to in the house.
“Monday.” I said upset.
“Valentine’s day.” said Mom. Was she expecting me to care? I rolled my eyes.
“So what?” I asked. Her jaw dropped.
“You know, if you wore a bright color maybe a cute guy would pay more attention to you or you would have decent friends.” snapped Mom. I have friends Baylee and Spinner, they work locally and kept their promise to me that they wouldn’t leave this town without me. We’re planning on all going to New York once I graduate in May. In New York, Baylee’s beautiful art will finally have more recognition, Spinner will be a famous poet and guitar player as for me I will become a hairstylist.
“Baylee and Spinner are my friends.” I snapped.
“Rose, I mean friends who stand a chance at a future. Baylee’s a starving artist and Spinner works at Starbucks.” snapped Mom as she exited my room. I put on the green and black striped shirt along with a pair of jeans then exited my room. My mom and dad were in the kitchen eating breakfast with my little sister, Liz. Dad sighed when I walked through the kitchen. He isn’t proud of my choices and thinks I should go do something meaningful with my life like become a doctor or a member of the army. I grabbed my black combat boots and backpack from the closet then slid my feet into the boots.
“See you later.” I said walking out the door. Baylee was parked in the driveway holding a coffee. I got into the car and chucked my bag into the backseat. Baylee set the coffee down in the cup holder and drove.
“You aren’t into this stupid day either, huh.” said Baylee. I thought about what my mom mentioned earlier and felt sick.
“The meaning of today is stupid. There’s other days you can celebrate love called anniversaries. No need to make people who are single feel bad about being alone. If it was simple the word single wouldn’t exist.” I explained taking a sip of my coffee.
“Yeah being single sucks. Why don’t you ask out that guy you like Gavin?” asked Baylee. I laughed very hard, coffee almost slipped from my mouth. Gavin’s this guy who I’ve liked since elementary school. I don’t really know why I like him, we are opposites. He is a popular jock and I’m what people would classify as a punk just by my looks.
“Please he has too big of an ego. He would never notice me, no one ever does.” I said.
“Hey, Spinner and I notice you.” said Baylee jokingly.
“You guys were outsiders in high school too.” I said truthfully. They were just like me when they were in high school, when I started in high school it was like the adopted me into their tight circle.
“We weren’t outsiders, we were authentic.” Said Baylee. I kept quiet and chugged my coffee because she was right, most of the people in high school are complete fakes. Baylee pulled into the school and parked the car.
“Spinner’s picking you up today.” Said Baylee. It was unusual for Spinner to pick me up because usually he was busy at Starbucks once school let out.
“Ok why?” I asked.
“Some guy is paying me to do some artwork for him. Like always I need the money.” Said Baylee as she drove away. I turned and walked into school.
Inside the school, I could smell cheap flowers and chocolate. Couples were all over the place acting annoyingly cute. Repetitively I listened to them saying “I love you”. I walked over to my locker grabbed my books then looked up. There was Gavin and Brittany walking past me holding hands and kissing each other’s cheeks. My insides grew with jealousy and hate towards Brittany. Despite the bitchy comments Brittany gave me and the fact that she is dating the guy I’ve liked forever, there was really no need for me to hate her. I walked to class with all my books.
