When we got to Shop Rite we headed to the management office. There was a man who had bad hygiene and smelt like McDonalds sitting at the desk.
“Kevin, this is Rose that chick I told you who will be a part of the Shop Rite baggers.” Said Spinner with fake glee. Kevin smiled and shook my hand.
“Nice to meet you. Let me get the paperwork.” Said Kevin as he opened his desk. Kevin handed me the papers and a pen. Spinner pulled a chair from the corner of the room. I sat down and filled out the paperwork.
“Everyone here has an identity, something special they do like me I DJ the store. What is yours?” asked Kevin. I wanted to laugh and call him a moron, but I’m desperately need the job so I shut up. Spinner walked out and got to work.
“You can pick.” I said as I handed him my paperwork.
“You can be quiet. Now, what I want you to do is go over to the bag station and say nothing at all. No talking while you are at work.” Said Kevin handing me my too large work shirt. I gave him a thumbs up and put the shirt on. Kevin laughed as I left his office.
I walked over to the bag stations and saw Gavin he was here working too. Quietly, I went and started bagging with an old lady who was scanning. I stayed quiet and bagged until Spinner came and got me.
“Rose, are you ready to go?” asked Spinner. I couldn’t talk so I nodded my head and walked away from my station. We put our uniforms away and headed out to the car.
In the car, Spinner’s phone went off. It was Baylee calling. He answered and put her on speaker phone.
“Hey how’s the art?” asked Spinner.
“Pretty good, I’m bringing someone to the café tonight. Is that ok?” asked Baylee. I knew she was talking about the man from this morning.
“Is this the mystery man from this morning?” asked Spinner. Baylee laughed.
“Yes and you guys can meet him.” Said Baylee.
“Great, see you then.” Said Spinner as he hung up on her. It got quiet for a moment, Spinner put one arm around me like he did the other day. It was new for him to do that, but I liked it.
“So how was your first day?” asked Spinner. My first day was quiet and boring, doing the same thing for seven hours.
“Quiet.” I said.
“Really? From what I saw it was busy.” Said Spinner.
“Oh ok then yeah it was busy.” I said. Spinner chuckled as we pulled into the parking lot.
“Stay here, I just need to grab my guitar and notebook.” Said Spinner as he got out of the car and ran into the apartment. I sat in the car and waited. I took my phone out of my pocket and looked for new messages, but it was thankfully empty. Spinner came back and put his guitar case in the backseat. We drove downtown to the café. The three of us normally go to the café to show Spinner our support.
His parents haven’t ever heard him preform because they want him to go into finance. When his parents found out he didn’t want to do anything “realistic” with his life, they kicked him out. He lived with his grandmother until things started getting more complex with his family. His grandmother was backed into a corner and unfairly had to ask Spinner to leave. When Spinner left his grandmother’s house Baylee and him talked about their family issues and decided to get the apartment.
We arrived at the café and headed inside. I held the door and saw a large crowd of people inside. Normally, this place was nearly dead.
“What’s with all the people?” I asked. The people were all nicely dressed, making me feel underdressed.
“Not sure, but I got to go backstage.” Said Spinner as he walked away with his guitar. I searched for Baylee and her man.
“Over here.” Said Baylee a few minutes later. I turned and she had grabbed us a seat up front. Her mystery man and her were sitting over there. I make my way over.
“Hi.” I said.
“Gabe, this is Rose. Rose, Gabe’s the guy I’ve been seeing for about two weeks.” Said Baylee. Gabe shook my hand.
“Nice to meet you. Baylee speaks highly of you.” Said Gabe. I took a seat and figured I would be a good friend and ask basics.
“How did you guys meet?” I asked.
“I was looking for some pieces to go in my new house and all of my coworkers told me Baylee did their artwork. They showed me beautiful pictures of the pieces and gave me her number. After work that day, I called her and she came over the next morning. From then on we just clicked.” Explained Gabe. I thought that was sweet.
“You have good taste in artists.” I said. Gabe chuckled and held Baylee’s hand.
“I sure do.” He said as he kissed Baylee.
“I’m going to get us some drinks.” Said Gabe as he left the table.
“What do you think?” asked Baylee. Gabe seemed nice, very attractive.
“Good.” I said. Baylee smiled. Gabe came back to the table with drinks. We all looked up to the stage. Spinner walked up there and sat on the stool.
“Hey everyone, tonight I’m going to sing a cover of Sweater Weather by Neighborhood.” Said Spinner as he took his guitar out of its case. He held onto the guitar and started to perform.
“Your friend's got talent.” Whispered Gabe.
“We know.” Whispered Baylee. When the song was over everyone clapped and lots of people put money in his guitar case. Spinner grabbed his things and went backstage.
