An edgy agreement sprung up between Jimmy and Alan, it was based on letting the other do and say whatever they wanted. Only occasionally was the arrangement tested, mostly when Alan acted like the house was his. The longer Jimmy's Mum was away, the tighter Alan began to act. Jimmy had to let the flash of anger pass into the void, a void that had been created by his departed Mum. It was an enormous hole, that he could throw all sorts of feelings into and observe in the third person. However the lump in his chest could not be discarded, and would not go away. He missed his Singaporean Mum.

When Alan pointed at this and that telling him he was a messy brat he groaned thinking have the damn house it will be match sticks soon with you in it . He kept hold of his thoughts becasue he didn't want Alan thinking he could get rid of Jimmy. He didn't think the placid man had it in him anyway, but Jimmy also knew that people easily acted out of character under duress. They had been taught that by the school councillor, who had sprung up out of nowhere.

The school councillor's name was Macka. He made an imposing figure to them all. Lean and nearly tall, he moved with a dancers grace. He had made many suggestions to improve the school hall bunker, and had even managed to get hold of some welders, who worked on unusual metal, also arranged by him.  Three spherical spheres, submarines really, nestled together like enormous bananas at the bottom of the cellar. Macka had said they would hold a dozen people each.

Something nagged at Jimmy. Macka had in a way taken total control. Mr Knowles followed him everywhere, as did the other teachers. Half the kids followed him with their eyes, and Jimmy was not immune to observing his every action. He was on the verge of tagging after the man himself, then Helen nudged him and said:

"His not a councillor Jimmy, his like, a, like a.."

"Secret agent." Said Jimmy and the two looked at each other, then looked back at Macka.

"Is he our friend?" Helen had inched closer to him, he could feel her body in sound and heat, as they looked at the supposed councillor. Suddenly Macka looked at them both and winked.

"I think so Heren, I think so."
