Chapter Ten.
"The community library was a building most wouldn't go in. It was where all of the books were old and terrible. Not even 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' would be in this library because it was known for the reputation. A reputation of teenage hookups and awkward high schoolers meeting up for a writing club. That's where I met Phil. So no I didn't meet him at a stupid party for drugs regardless what you have heard. "
Keith knew that. He knew where his son would go. His son was so truthful back then. Back when he was new to the area and wanted to explore his options. Keith knew his son had talent in writing. He knew his son was truthful. He didn't know he was this truthful though.
"I think this deserves the most explanation because Phil was a good guy. Was. He is brilliant as a writer and I never would think he wanted to be an author by just his looks. But just like what we all have learned. Looks shouldn't be decieving. "
Keith pulls up to the library and sighs. He looks in the back of the car and offers Lucy a book. Lucy claps and Keith only hopes there is at least a decent children's area.
There is so when they walk in she goes to it instantly.
He pushes play again.
"You will probably find him in the music area because we shared so much in common that we exchanged glances and hellos for the first time there. We didn't know we went to the library for the same purpose. Writing. Until we both went to the table and smiled."
Reece went inside the library and then looked at paper saying the announcement
Writing Club.
Bring your ideas and a draft of a work no more than 2000 words! We bring snacks and you bring yourself! Have a fun time every Tuesday @ 5:00pm!
Today is Tuesday. How ironic, Keith thinks to himself. How really ironic.
He remembers how Reece would be so excited for weeks on end during the spring for these Tuesday meetings.
Reece breathed in a sigh and then went to music area. He saw a boy around his age and saw he was going through some magizines.
"Rolling Stone," Reece said as he went against what his mind told him. Which was: you don't need friends. Just graduate and get on with your life. No one deserves your kindness.
The boy smiled, "yeah possibly the only thing in this library that actually is worth a shit."
Reece laughed.
Fuck the whole trying to not make friends. You deserve one, he thought to himself.
"Which edition is it?" Reece asked and the boy's eyebrows raised.
"Ugh one of the first covering Guns N' Roses," he showed it to Reece and Reece nodded.
"Sweet," Reece went through a different pile and they spent the next half hour exchanging a magazine articles.
When it was time for the meeting Reece went to the table that was marked and he was surprised to see the boy sat next to him.
"It started with liking Guns N' Roses. I am sure you heard this song play more and more in my room. I blasted it for weeks. It was 'Don't Cry'. We both said it was our favorite song by them and now looking back it was a sign Phil isn't the only one."
Isn't the only one? What does Reece mean by that?
Keith looks at his watch and it was 4:45. It was close to the meeting. Maybe Phil was here. Maybe he wasn't. But there was a shot. Maybe he didn't want to go because of all what happened. Which Keith only knew Reece and him weren't frieends anymore because of it.
