ACT iv

chapter twenty eight; devil in me

sean was dead.

i didn't really know him, but to see him be executed was excruciating.

my hand gripped mars' as he began to look away. i couldn't watch, but my eyes were glued to sean's convulsing body.

it was too much to process as mars got up and we promptly followed him.

"what do we do now?" poppy had finally spoke after a while as mars looked between the three of us, mustering an answer after a moment.

"we go to the bunker."

i crossed my arms and gave him a look. "are you sure that's a good idea?"

"venus, he killed sean." mars' voice was lighter as cyrus began to walk away, urging poppy to follow him.

"it's dangerous." i pined for him to stop for a second to think.

"wake up venus!" mars yelled, back in away for a minute as i took a step forward. "we can't wait. i can't let anyone else get hurt."

"no one else is going to get hurt mars, unless you charge into that bunker without a plan." he turned around and gave me a look as i let out a sigh.

"we've lost too many people venus. julius, kala, sean. who else has to die because of us?" mars' voice cracked as i wrapped my arms around him.

he sobbed in my shoulder as i held him, a couple of tears slipped from my eyes as i roughly pushed them away.

"they're all gone."

his words stuck to my brain as i began to realize trust he was right. mars only really has cyrus at the moment. his friend group fell apart for the course of a year. julius and sean were dead, trey was a traitor, and titus was far away.

i could only hold him and let the world around him slowly crumble as it broke my heart.

i ran my fingers through his hair, pressing my lips against the side of his head before he looked back up, his eyes glossed over as i brushed the salty water from his face.

"we'll find him mars. please think out your actions." i pleaded as he nodded his head. "i don't want to loose you again."

"you'll never loose me venus." there was a confidence in his voice that brought some sort of peace to my mind.

"where do we go now?" i changed the subject as mars looked around the area.

"poppy's place." he responded, the two of us moving over to where poppy and cyrus stood before telling them where we were going.

"are you sure it's okay for you guys to be seen, you know, together." poppy's face twisted a little as shrugged. "does it really matter at this point?"
