There is a book in Jefferson in the kept behind a hotel desk in the main lobby waiting for any guest who is brave enough to open its pages. But the catch is that you have to be a guest at the old and historic hotel, and you have to take the book back to your room. And even if you make it to the last words in the book without anything noteworthy happening, then you may be in for a long, restless night.

This book as called the Book of the Dead, for it is a book compiled by guests at the hotel about weird encounters of another class. Handwritten accounts of weird noises, loud footsteps in the hall beyond the door, ghostly encounters, whispers, cold spots and all kinds of other strange and weird things. In this hotel there are no regulations about what and when things might happen. They just happen.

The Jefferson hotel is located where the Caddo Indians once built their communities. Even today a trip across the spooky CaddoLake even offers a glimpse of the feral and mystifying country that has long given birth to myths and tales of the strange and baffling. A few locals even talk of a Big Foot creature that stalks the heavily wooded area around the lake.

But the place that acquires the most interest as a place of supernatural wonder is the Jefferson Hotel. Here have been reports of weird happenings, of ghostly sightings and creepy noises.

HISTORY:

The Jefferson was once used as a depot to store cotton and changed hands several times. It was transformed into a hotel in the 20th century. As you walk down the corridor and gaze into each room you'll get a sense of comfort afforded by Southern Belles and gentle men in days gone by. Close your eyes and you'll hear the rustle of petticoats, the whistles of the steamboats on the river. In the 20's it was once known as the Crystal Palace. There is more to the old corridors than the luxurious décor and contemporary amenities nonetheless.

There is more than just a sweep with olden times. There are accounts of ghostly spirits from the old days that still haunts the halls and rooms of the hotel. And several of these experiences are documented in the book behind the registration desk.

Some of the activities documented include whispers from nowhere, orchestra music from a closed dining hall, thuds on walls and headboards, the scent of cigar smoke in the smoke-free building, faucets opening on their own, and doors pulling back when pulled shut. Children have been heard laughing and romping all over the hotel in the middle of the night. Click clack noises of someone walking have been heard in the carpeted hallway.
