Chapter 31-

“What-what do you mean?” I asked, my throat choking up. It wasn’t the fact that I missed his mum or anything, I didn’t even know her. It was that I couldn’t imagine Luke going through so much pain. I couldn’t imagine my life without my Mother.

“My mother died, when I was 13, she died in a car accident.” He explained. Now everything made sense, why he never liked me mentioning his parents.

“What about your dad?” I asked, I have never heard Luke mention him.

“Never met him, his an idiot anyway from what my mum told me.” He said.

I still didn’t like the thought of Luke wanting to die. He seemed a bit anti-social and away from the world but he never seemed depressed, or even slightly upset. In fact he seemed almost happy most of the time.

“So are you saying that you’re-“ I started but Luke interjected. “I’m suicidal.” He confirmed looking down as if he was disappointed in himself.

I literally felt my heart break at the thought of Luke dead. He was the only person other than my mother to care for me in a long time.

“You’re not going to kill yourself are you?” I asked, scared that this was his way of saying goodbye.

“No, well I’ll try not to.” He said with a smile.

“Does anyone else know?” I asked.

“No, just you. You’re the only person that needs to know because you’re the only person keeping me alive. You’re kinda like my oxygen, before you I was out of breath, ready to give up. Then you came along and I was suddenly feeling a bit better. But there are still some days when I’m out of breath with the sudden need to give up. And I’m scared that one of these days are coming soon.” He explained, he really enjoyed metaphors.

“I’m sorry but I don’t get it.” I replied.

“Well, why do you think I randomly appear at your house at random times in the night, it’s because when I’m with you I slowly become myself again Rose.” He stated.

I had tears streaming down my face, I never knew this. I gave him a hug, holding on as long as I could, not wanting to let go. And by the way Luke was holding onto me it seems that he felt the same way.

“Please don’t cry.” He pleaded as we pulled apart.

“Luke, I can’t imagine a life without you. I know that you said you will try to hold on but what happens if you can’t?” I asked as I let the tears stream down my face.

“Well don’t imagine it, I’ll always be here. Even if one day I go, I’ll always be looking over you. I promise.” He said as if that would make the situation any better.

“Don’t go. Stay.” I whispered, thinking of all the possible ways for him to stay alive, it was so much to take in.

“It’s not that easy.” He said as he stood up, throwing his fingers through his hair.

“I know, I know. But you need to stop talking about when you’re gone. Just don’t. Please.” I whispered, sitting down on the floor hugging my legs to my chest.

“You know Rose, I do love you.” He said as he sat down with me.

“I know, I love you too.” I replied.

“No Rose, I actually love you. I’m in love with you. I always have been and always will be.” He said as he took my hand.

I looked up at him and saw him with a goofy smile spread across his face.

My heart stopped, I didn’t know how to reply. Suddenly it hit me, why I cared for him so much, why I was never actually that interested in Ashton.

“I love you too.” I replied with a smile.

In that moment I realised that I had fallen for Luke Hemmings.
