We didn't know much about the zombies back then, but I still remember thinking, this must be how the zombies feel when I woke up on the third day. Drake had woken me, completely furious that Kiera and Lydia helped themselves to breakfast.
"They took the proper amount of rations first of all." I put up one finger. "Secondly, I don't remember anyone telling them how the food distribution worked, so that is all of our faults, not theirs." I put up a second.
I then praised them for their assertiveness in front of Drake and watched him stalk off. Only after that I told them that we all ate meals at the same time because we laid out a plan. Then I gave them the assignment of reworking the plan to fit them in it with everyone else.
"Drake is pissed. He just went storming off saying that he was leaving for a while." Will told me when I went to check supplies.
"The new girls fetched themselves breakfast because they didn't know what to do. His giant ego won't accept that they have needs too." I said while taking note of all the important things that we were missing.
"He would probably kill them too if it wasn't for you." Will said. "Thank you for trusting me."
I was surprised by what he said at first, but then I understood it. I hardly knew him before the apocalypse and I now he is by far the person I can trust to handle things the most. While my closest friends are good contenders, he knows how to survive and how to protect them.
"I'm just glad Rae convinced me to take you with us." I said and smiled. Will blushed at the realization that Rae wanted him to come.
"She did that?" He asked and I just nodded and asked him to check food and water supplies. I knew that food and water were better off than the other supplies, but we still needed to keep everything in check, especially with the new additions.
I started to take note of what things would help get people in a better mood and realized how bad things were. Most clothing was sweaty, we had no blankets, no hygiene stuff aside from the dwindling supply of toilet paper, and the only reason anyone was able to sleep is because of exhaustion.
It's really no wonder that everyone was completely on edge and snippy. We weren't truly living just yet. We were surviving, sure, but not living. The next step we needed to take was to get some other supplies. Pillows, blankets, board games, anything that will help people be comfortable.
The only problem about that was the fact that we were at a school. A school doesn't have those things. Homes do. Homes that would require us to go outside and travel distances just to get things that aren't necessary.
It would take some true persuasion to get them to agree with me. I don't even know how we would get anywhere, and it would be extremely dangerous. We already witnessed what other survivors were willing to do, on top of that, zombies would be everywhere.
For the first time since the apocalypse started, I looked down and pulled my necklace out from under my shirt. My mother given it to me and she had always been good with people. Lighting up a room with her smile, putting kind force into her words that made her both strong and gentle, no matter what she could do it. Help me, mother. This camp is falling apart and I need to convince them to risk their lives to fix it.
Of course, I got no response whatsoever as to how to do so. I was completely on my own with the whole leading thing, and it stressed me out greatly.
I took a deep breath and crossed the hall from our storage quarters to the gym. Everyone was sitting down and eating breakfast except for Drake. Apparently Will and Jaso had brought in some chairs for the newcomers this morning because there were more chairs than when I had last checked.
