The voice that filled my ears sent chills down my spine. I opened my mouth to say something, but I didn't know what, so I closed it again.
"Ramona, Ramona. How very dumb of you to leave poor little defenseless Nathan and his mommy all alone," Demeille sneered from the other end of the line.
My heart stopped. I swallowed, my throat dry. "What did you do?" I breathed. I received a chuckle in response.
"You know, I hope you don't think that you're getting away with that little wind trick you pulled the other day. It was so rude. Adrien and I still have headaches from hitting our heads so hard."
Good, I wanted to spit out. But there was a part of me that knew it wouldn't be smart to irritate him even further right now. Instead, I stated in a monotone voice, "Sorry to hear that." It came off as sarcastic, which I couldn't control, because that's exactly what it was. Nonetheless, it seemed to roll right off Demeilles back. "So why are you doing this? There must be something you're hoping to get out of it."
Ignoring my question, Demeille simply chuckled. "I need you to get to Nathan's house as fast as you can, or else his mother's death will be on your hands. And if you still haven't arrived, he'll go next."
My breath caught in my throat, but I knew I couldn't reveal to him that I was afraid; he'd take advantage of that. "I'll be there soon, just don't hurt anyone." I immediately flew out the front door, after quickly scribbling a note telling my mom I just went out for a bit.
"Oh, don't you worry Ramona. As long as you follow through, no one will get hurt," Demeille assured me. I could just see his sinister smile; it sounded as though he was joking. You could never be too sure when it came to him. I hung up the phone, shoving it in my pocket, before taking off in as fast a run as I could manage. My legs burned with the effort, but I ignored the pain. Even being supernatural, I still got worn out at times.
It seemed like an eternity before I reached Nathan's house, suburban residences whizzing by on each side as my pace picked up to full speed. When I did arrive, I didn't even bother knocking. The door was unlocked, which made me fear the worst had happened, but I rushed in and immediately began scanning the front room. "Emily?" I called. "Nathan?" My voice trembled; I didn't even care about betraying my fear at this point. I was so afraid that they were dead, and that it was all my fault-
"Ramona, keep it down. My mom's napping in her room. What's up with you? And how did you get into my house?"
"Nathan!" I cried with joy, crushing him in a hug. "Your front door was unlocked, you should be more careful!" I scolded when he pulled away from the hug. I could see the ghost of a smile playing on his lips, as if he was flattered that I cared so much.
"Relax, Ramona, I'm fine. You know, it's funny that you should show up like this, I was going to text you earlier and invite you over because I felt bad about the other day. You know, I should just accept that we're super different, on so many levels, and I was being such a jerk about something you can't control. And anyways, I can't seem to find my phone, so that's why I didn't text you."
Aww, his rambling is so cute, I sighed to myself. But I quickly snapped out of it when my phone pinged with a new text message. With shaky hands, I unlocked it and checked to see who it was. It came from Nathan's phone.
He dropped his phone on the field that day you guys were spying on me and Adrien. I was never at his house, btw. Scared you for payback haha. Meet me at the street light a block away from school to get the phone back. Just, don't get in my way again, Marlo. Otherwise, you're boyfriend and his mom really will be dead meat.
Fuming, I texted back:
*your. And please, for your own sake, find a better hobby than terrorizing innocents. You could try learning proper grammar, for starters. But I'll be there soon, so don't try anything stupid.
I powered down my phone completely in order to prevent receiving any further texts from him.
"What was that about? You look stressed, is everything okay?" Nathan asked, his tone genuinely worried. I shrugged, running my hand through my hair.
"Demeille has your phone. He told me, when I tried calling you earlier, I had to get to your house as soon as possible, or he was gonna...off you and your mom. He texted me just now and said he was never at your house, you just dropped your phone and he found it. Nathan, I was so scared that he'd actually do something," I whimpered, pulling him into another hug, tears threatening to fall on his shoulders as I sobbed. I wasn't holding anything in anymore.
"Woah, woah, Ramona, it's okay. We're okay," Nathan whispered as he pat the top of my head. I pulled away from him, wiping my eyes. "Did he say if he was gonna give the phone back or not? I kinda need it for internet so I can research for my science project," he laughed nervously.
"Yeah, about that," I mumbled. "He wants me to meet him at that street light by the school to get it back."
Nathan's eyes widened. "Do you realize how stupid that is? He could be planning something. Doesn't that seem even a little suspicious to you?"
I sighed. "Yes, of course it's suspicious. But that's just Demeille. I'm sure I'll be fine." My voice faltered on the last syllable; I couldn't even convince myself of what I was saying. Nathan looked at me in disbelief, but shrugged it off.
"Well, you already know how I feel about you going. I don't need my phone that badly, Ramona. I don't want you getting hurt over something so stupid."
I swallowed. "It'll be fine, he's not going to try anything." I gave Nathan one last hug before I turned to leave. "I'll be fine."
