I gulped. "It's my fault, isn't it? They're only mad because I-,"

Demitri cut me off. "Now, wait just a minute! It is not your fault! Trust me, they've been planning this for a long time. It's the Chancellors that they're fed up with. They want to bring vampires back to what they believe is our natural lifestyle – they don't see anythin' wrong with killing innocent people. And the only way they know how to accomplish that goal is to bring down the Chancellors. You just happened to come along, and so you almost became part of that plan, is all."

"You know Dario, the one I told you has the mind-wiping ability, there's something different about him. He's not bad like the others. I think it might've been Anton or Demeille that forced him to become a blackeye. He doesn't like killing people," I insisted. "I don't think he ever even wanted to be a blackeye."

Demitri sighed. "He's made his choice, Ramona. If he wanted to leave the gang, don't you think he would have by now?"

I shook my head. "I think they're blackmailing him. Before you rescued me, Anton had to force Dario to use his ability on me. He said something about...Dario's family. He threatened them, implying something might happen to them if he didn't do what he was told."

Demitri rubbed his forehead, closing his eyes tight. "What are you saying? Are you suggesting we do something about it? Because I'm telling you, we have no chance against Anton as it stands right now."

"Well, they're boosting their numbers right now, aren't they?" I huffed, getting off the couch and jumping to my feet. "I suggest we do the same. You said we're going to war, right? Let's give them a proper fight!"

Demitri stood up as well. "As much as I appreciate the enthusiasm, it's something much easier said than done. We don't know how many blackeyes they've recruited, how many of them have abilities, or what kinds of abilities they might have. Right now, our only concern is getting you home to your mom so that she knows you're alright." He sighed. "This is something we're gonna have to play by ear."

I crossed my arms. "Is there any way we can contact the Chancellors? Get their help?"

"As of right now, I'm not sure. Seeing as how this is a matter that mainly concerns the Chancellor of Vampires, we might only have to talk to them...," he trailed off, staring at me with a perplexed expression.

"What? What is it?" I asked, glancing to either side of me.

"Since when were your eyes...golden?"

Right, because he's only known me as a blackeye. He's never seen how I would usually look...wait. He doesn't even know I'm half angel! "Oh, um, well, they were golden before I turned into a blackeye because...well, because I'm not full vampire." He raised his eyebrows, prompting me to continue. "I'm half angel, too."

His jaw dropped. "I've known hybrids before, but not like you! Wow, that's truly somethin'. But then, why are your eyes just now turnin' gold? They've been black this whole time, but now the black of the iris is fading."

"The only explanation I can think of is that I've been near another angel at some point. My dad told me years ago in one of his letters that an angel's energy amplifies in the presence of other angels, so hypothetically, it could be giving my blackeye side a run for its money now. But that doesn't make any sense. I don't know any angels other than my dad. Besides," my voice wavered, "he used to send letters all the time, at least once a week. But I haven't gotten any lately, it's really unlike him. Maybe he found out I'm part blackeye now, and he's ashamed to call me his daughter...," I trailed off, a small sob cutting me short as tears formed in my eyes at the thought.

Demitri grabbed my shoulders. "No, he's not ashamed of you. He could never be ashamed of you!" He cried. As his eyes bore into my own, I noticed their darkness fading.

My breath caught in my throat as I pulled myself out of his grasp. "No...no," I breathed, pivoting on my heel and searching for the nearest door. Once I found it, I shoved my way outside into the cool night air. It was pitch black out; I couldn't see any landmarks that might tell me where I was, so I just ran. I could hear Demitri gaining on me, his footsteps clapping hard against the pavement. As luck would have it, I eventually reached a dead end and had no choice but to face Demitri.

A street lamp hummed nearby and provided enough of a dim glow to where I could just make out Demitri's facial features. "Ramona, I know this may seem sudden, but," he stopped, as if unable to find the right words for what he wanted to say. I couldn't tell if it was the streetlight or just my eyes playing tricks on me, but I could've sworn I saw his eyes...glowing.

"No, it can't be," I whispered to myself. Demitri sighed heavily, taking a step away from me and looking down at the ground.

"I should've told you sooner, I know," he muttered, before he became surrounded in a soft golden light. Confused and afraid, I wanted to keep looking but I couldn't, as the golden light just kept glowing brighter, until I was completely blinded. I covered my eyes as best as I could, but in my peripheral vision I could see the light begin to shimmer until it dissipated into a golden whisper, and then it was dark again.

I turned my head, slowly, towards where Demitri had been standing. Only now, another man stood in his place, and a boy around my age was laying on the ground next to his feet, motionless.

I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out besides jagged breathing as I tried to form coherent words. The man came closer until he was right in front of me, but I kept backing away until my back hit the brick wall behind me.

"Ramona," the man whispered. "It's okay, it's me...your father."
