"Family? Veren, I am your family!" Anna screeched, poking a finger at herself and stomping her foot like a child. "What have they ever done for you?"
"They've loved me no matter what, even after everything I've put them through, and they don't lie to me," he snapped. "That's more than I can say for you, especially now."
Anna's face contorted into an expression of rage, with a twinge of sadness in her eyes as she simply stared at her brother, speechless. "Okay, fine," she finally relented through clenched teeth, her hands balled into fists. "Yes, I took the blood bags, but I'm not telling any of you where they are. And it's not because I don't want to, it's because I can't."
"What do you mean, you can't?" Mom fumed. "What did you do with them?" In that moment, I was taken aback by the pure anger and hatred that shone in my mom's eyes. I had never seen her so mad before.
"The person I gave them to, they don't want anyone knowing they're back in town," Anna admitted, immediately looking as though she thought she said too much.
Time seemed to slow down as my mom lunged towards her. My feet were moving faster than my thoughts, and I found myself blocking my mom's path in a matter of seconds. She hadn't realized in time, and knocked me down to the ground. My back collided with our wooden flooring with a crisp thwack, causing my vision to go spotty. As I laid on the ground, I was just barely able to make out Anna's silhouette disappearing through our front door.
"Oh my...oh...Ramona, I'm...I'm so sorry," Mom stammered, tears filling her eyes. "I didn't...I didn't mean..." she trailed off, covering her mouth with one hand as she used the other to balance herself as she lowered to her knees by my side. I could hear my father curse under his breath as he knelt down next to us, resting a hand on my head.
"Honey, are you alright?" He asked softly. I nodded, attempting to prop myself up on my elbows. He helped me, and I was able to sit fully upright. By this point, Mom was sobbing into Dad's shoulder, obviously distraught from the whole situation. I couldn't say I blamed her, and I wasn't even mad that she had knocked me down, as it was my fault anyways. But something in me knew that I had to get in her way.
Anna wouldn't have been able to take a blow like that. Archangels may live a hundred, or even a thousand, times longer than the average human lifespan, but they weren't immortal. Taking a blow from not just a blackeye, but an enraged blackeye? Well, it would have certainly taken its toll, that's for sure.
"Lucy, I have to go after her," Dad muttered quietly, helping Mom stand up with him as he led her a few feet away from me. It was obviously to ensure I wouldn't hear them talking, but I don't think my father realized that even a human would have been able to hear him whisper from that distance. "She may be meeting whoever she gave the blood bags to. I have to follow her...I have to reason with her," he insisted. "Do you know how you'd be able to get more if you needed to?"
Mom sighed, casting a glance at me before pulling him into the hallway far enough where I wouldn't be able to completely make out what they were saying. I rolled my eyes, realizing I'd have to help myself stand up.
I took a deep breath, grabbing the nearby end table to pull myself off the ground. Whatever happened when I fell, it definitely hurt. As a supernatural, I did have accelerated healing. But as with any injury, the more intense it was, the longer it took to heal. I imagined that the fall broke my tailbone, so it would take a few minutes for it to heal. For me, at least.
By the time I had stood completely upright, I could already feel the pain subsiding. A buzz from my back pocket startled me. I grabbed my phone out and realized I had gotten a text from Nathan.
You're not coming to school today, are you?
I smirked, then texted back:
Nah, I don't feel like it. That was quite the understatement.
Within seconds, I received a reply.
Well, do you at least feel like opening the door?
I furrowed my brows, confused, before I hobbled over to the front door and opened it. Sure enough, Nathan stood there with a wide grin spread across his face.
"How many times are you going to show up like this?" I asked with a laugh. "And...why are you here? Aren't you supposed to be in school?"
He shrugged, taking a step inside after I moved over to let him in. "The answer to your first question is 'to be determined.' As for the other question, you're supposed to be in school right now, too. And like you, I don't feel like being there right now. I just barely made it through first period, and I didn't feel like just barely making it through the rest of the school day. So, here I am." He shrugged again, flashing a bright smile. He made his way through the living room to one of the couches and flopped himself down on one of them, patting the spot beside him. "Come on, update me on the whole Fangs situation."
I slowly sat down next to him, wincing, being cautious so as not to disrupt my back's healing process. From what I could tell, it was almost fully healed, but I still wanted to be careful. "Well, I don't know what all you want to know. We haven't really made much progress. Anna's up to something, and she ran off a little bit ago after getting into a fight with my mom." I didn't feel it was necessary to go into details, so I just left it at that.
"Well, she better get a move on with sending that message to the Chancellors. Dario told me at breakfast that he heard Demeille and Adrien are planning to do something big within the next few days. That's why I've been so nervous to go to school without you lately. I'm worried they might show up at school and...and try something. If you're not there...I don't know what I'd do," he murmured, staring at me with his liquid mahogany eyes. In that moment, they were illuminated by the faint rays of late morning sun filtering through the windows at the front of the house. My breath caught in my throat when I noticed I had been staring.
I cleared my throat. "Did, um, did Dario mention any specifics about what Adrien and Demeille plan to do?"
Nathan opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off when my father ran through the living room towards the front door.
"Ram- oh, hello, Nathan. Ramona, I'll be right back. Stay here. Nathan, since you're here anyways, I don't think you're going to want to leave," Dad huffed, out of breath.
I opened my mouth to ask what in the world he meant, but he had already left and closed the door behind him.
