Acheron shoved Anton off of him, throwing him to the ground. He yanked the Sun Necklace off of his neck and tossed it over Lumielle's wall; at me. My eyes widened, but I reached my hands out and caught it right before it hit the ground. Acheron's eyes met mine for a split second as he gave me a short nod. I knew my expression betrayed exactly what I was thinking: No one else is supposed to touch this necklace...
I realized that this was quite an honor, but that he had only thrown it to me because he didn't want it within Anton's reach. Still, I was...how would I put it...starstruck, in a sense. The Sun Necklace was sacred to all vampires, and it never left its place from around Acheron's neck. Until now, when I held it in my very own hands.
I didn't have too much time to admire its unrivaled beauty before one of the Fantom Fangs members - who had made it past Lumielle before she created her wall of light energy - threw herself at me, clawing at my hair. I quickly shoved the Sun Necklace deep in my pocket before I threw the first punch, which landed square with her jaw and sent her flying. She landed about five feet away from me in the dirt with a crisp thwack.
I stared at my hands in shock. What in the world...I was never able to do something like that before...Then it occurred to me: being in the presence of both Lumielle and Acheron was strengthening me, giving me power that I had never known before.
"R-Ramona," a scratchy voice breathed from beside me. "Wh-what's going o-on?" It was Nathan. He was fully awake now, but still sitting on the ground, clutching his knees close to himself as he rocked back and forth. I glanced down the half-circle of metal cylinders to see if anyone else had awakened. Aren was scrambling towards us on his hands and knees, trying to get away from a blackeye that was taunting him.
There was one other Fantom Fang that had gotten to us before Lumielle's wall went up, and he was dragging both my parents by their legs, away from everyone else. They were definitely awake, and struggling to get away from him. My mom was eventually able to land a powerful kick to his shin, knocking him to the ground. My mom hugged my father tightly as they glanced around frantically, looking for me. I waved my arms wildly, hoping to catch their attention.
As soon as they saw me, their faces lit up with relief, and my mother swung my father onto her back so she could sprint over to me. "Oh my goodness, Ramona, I was so worried about you," she rejoiced, enveloping me in an embrace so tight that I almost wasn't able to breathe.
"We were so worried," Dad corrected with a smirk, joining in on the hug after he was on his own two feet again. I hugged back as tightly as I could, but my attention was soon averted behind them. The blackeye that had been taunting Aren was now only a foot away. I maneuvered myself around my parents and kicked him right in the middle of his chest, knocking the wind out of him and causing him to fall to the ground on his back.
My breathing was quickened, and my heart was beating wildly. But I didn't have enough time to think things through before the other blackeye, that had tried taking my parents, pushed himself off of the ground and ran towards us with the speed of light, his fiery red hair blowing in the wind like flames. It wasn't until then that it dawned on me: because Acheron was here, the other blackeyes would also be strengthened. That meant that, while I could hold my own, the other blackeyes could pick themselves off the ground any minute now, and those of us with vampire DNA would be outnumbered. I wasn't sure angels would stand a chance against super-powered blackeyes. Especially blackeyes who were brainwashed with only one instruction to carry out: killing those considered to be their enemies.
Lumielle's wall of light energy offered just enough lighting in the darkness of the nighttime that I was able to keep track of where each of our enemies were. I bent down, grabbing Nathan and pulling him off the ground, using myself as a shield as the blackeye with crazy red hair, and the other who had taunted Aren before, closed in on us. My mom snarled when she saw the blackeye woman, who I had knocked down, pushing herself off of the ground and cracking her neck, staring us down with a venomous gaze.
Aren stood next to me, helping to shield Nathan as the blackeyes closed in on us. "Guys, I can do this," Nathan muttered, pushing us aside. "I've got this. You don't need to protect me," he asserted, his voice louder now. The blackeye with red hair seized the opportunity to rush towards Nathan so fast, he could barely be seen. I felt him knock me to the ground, and saw Aren fall next to me as the blackeye gripped Nathan tightly by the throat, pushing him up against the metal cylinder that I had been tied to.
Lumielle's wall began to flicker. "I...I don't think I can hold it up much longer!" she cried in despair. What must have been a hundred Fantom Fangs members waited on the other side, led by Demeille and Adrien. Acheron had tossed Anton into the midst of the blackeye swarm, swinging his fists this way and that, defeating as many as he could at once. But it wasn't enough. Lumielle's wall gave out, allowing the blackeyes to pour into the area where we were. Amidst all the chaos, I noticed Demitri practically gliding across the ground to get over to us.
"Haze!" He called out. The vampire with red hair snapped his attention over to him, confused. My mouth fell open in shock. That's Haze...?
I took the window where Haze was distracted to pick myself up off the ground and secure my grip around his neck, yanking him off of Nathan and slamming him into the ground. In that moment, I didn't care that Haze was Demitri's friend, because all I knew was that he was going to kill Nathan. I wasn't going to let that happen. Demitri needed to realize that he had already lost Haze long ago.
That is why I didn't care that Demitri watched as I landed punch after punch on Haze's face with one hand, holding him down by his neck with the other. He kicked at me, grabbing at my hands, attempting to free himself. But I was already too far gone. I wasn't letting him go. No one messes with the people I care about.
I almost didn't even realize when Demitri was right next to me, until it was too late. He pushed me off of Haze, checking to see if he was still alive. His cry of anguish said it all: Haze was gone. I hadn't even realized in my daze just how hard I had been hitting him. Demitri became enraged, glaring at me as he turned his whole body towards me.
His glare was so sinister, so angry, as he ran towards me that I wasn't able to process what was happening. I threw up my arms in defense, my first thought being that he was going to attack me. But I didn't realize how wrong I was until it was too late.
Demitri rushed past me and headed towards Nathan. I tried to get up, but an invisible force held me down. I turned my head to the left, noticing Adrien grinning maliciously at me from across the distance that separated us. He was not only using his ability on me, but Aren and my parents as well. We were all defenseless. As that reality sank in, I quickly snapped my head back just in time to see Demitri sink his fangs into Nathan's neck.
