I said a quick "see you later" to Nathan before he slipped out of the classroom we were in. "Of course, Mrs. Arche. What did you need?"
"Ramona Marlo...I've heard so much about you," she remarked, surveying me with narrowed eyes.
"Let me guess, Hamiel talked your ear off or something?" I joked.
She smirked. "No, not Hamiel. Come on, the others are gone. You can stop pretending you don't have any idea who I am," she scoffed.
"You're...Mrs. Arche, the new drama teacher...," I muttered, confused. Who does this lady think she is?
She stared straight at me, suddenly visibly irritated. "Seriously? No one has said anything about me? That almost hurts my feelings." She held her hand to her chest, pretending to be offended.
"I...I'm sorry, I...I just don't know you," I stammered, slowly making my way to the door. Sorry, Nathan, but I don't think I'll be joining drama after all...
"Are you protecting my brother? You don't have to, I already know he's escaped Thesia. He thought no one would notice," she snorted. "So, again, no one has said anything about me? Not even shown you a picture of your beloved auntie?"
I gasped. "Anna? What...how are you...why...," I blabbered, grasping futilely for words that would form a coherent sentence.
"Ah, that's Mrs. Arche to you," she admonished, a smug smile adorning her lips. "As for your questions...the how is that an archangel - such as myself - can come and go from Thesia whenever they so choose. The why is that I've been sent to retrieve your father and bring him back to Thesia, because he is most certainly not an archangel and therefore has not earned the privileges of one."
Thesia. I'm so used to saying "Heaven" around Nathan that I forgot the angels had their own name for it.
"No, please let him stay," I begged. "I spent my whole life not knowing him, and now I finally have that chance." Even though I technically just met my father, I already couldn't imagine my life without him.
Anna heaved a sigh. "Look, Ramona, I get that. I do. But orders are orders. Besides, it's for his own good. The more time he spends out of Thesia, the more mortal he becomes. Then, before long, he'll age and eventually die. I don't want that for my brother, and I'm sure you don't, either."
"What? Why didn't he say anything about that?" I breathed. "I had no idea that would happen... wait, if I'm half angel, will the same happen to me?"
Anna seated herself on top of her large desk, grabbing her long ponytail and pulling it over one shoulder. "Relax. It's a full-angel thing, and you have to have been born in Thesia for it to affect you. Which, all angels are, anyways."
I sat down on one of the plastic chairs that were still arranged in rows. "I still can't believe he didn't say anything about that," I muttered.
Anna crossed her arms. "I can," she scoffed. "He didn't want you to worry, or order him back to Thesia. My guess is that he planned to stay on Earth for the rest of his life, which I can only partly understand. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against you," she assured me. "I could just never understand how; more specifically, why he fell in love with a vampire. And not to mention Lucy Marlo, of all people...," she marveled, as if forgetting that she was talking to Lucy Marlo's daughter.
"Excuse me," I countered. "That is my mother you're talking about. And for the record, she's amazing. But not like you would know that, because even though you had the ability to visit us, you never did," I spat.
"Uh...w-well, I, um, you see, the life of an archangel is quite busy. Many responsibilities, you see," she reasoned.
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, sure. You know, I'm curious about something. If you're only on Earth to take my father away, why did you become a teacher here? It would've saved both of us a lot less trouble if you would've never come here in the first place."
"That is no way to talk to your aunt!" Anna whined. "But, in an answer to your question, me and Hamiel go way back. And besides, I wanted to meet my niece. I'm honestly fascinated by the fact that it's even possible for angel and vampire DNA to integrate together so... seamlessly." She stood up from her desk and walked in front of me, leaning down to better look me in the eye.
It wasn't until then that I noticed her eyes flickering from blue to silver. That's why I hadn't noticed she was an angel before; she had used some sort of disguising spell to hide her true eye color.
I scoffed. "Yeah, lately it hasn't been so seamless."
"Ah, I see. You're a blackeye. I would expect nothing less from a child of Lucy," she smirked.
I shot up from my seat, startling Anna and causing her to take a few steps backwards. "What is your problem with my mother?" I fumed. "She's done nothing to you."
"You don't know anything about what she's done," Anna sneered. "I've about run out of patience with you, young lady. I'll see you after school, you're dismissed."
My mind began to race. It's a good thing she's here, actually. Now it'll be easier for her to help us with the Fantom Fangs situation. I just have to convince her.
"Wait," I sighed. "There's something we actually need your help with."
She raised an eyebrow. "We as in...who?"
"Me, my dad, and pretty much the whole community," I informed her.
She eyed me with disbelief. "Oh really? What kind of predicament is this you speak of?"
I told her about the Fantom Fangs' plan to overthrow the Chancellors, and how we needed her help to get a message to them.
"What's in it for me if I do help?" She questioned, crossing her arms.
I scoffed in disbelief. "Seriously? You're not going to help your family out of the kindness of your heart?"
"Tell you what," she reasoned. "I help you guys, get a message to the Chancellors, whatever. But then Veren has to come back to Thesia with me when I leave. I can't go back empty-handed, you see."
I gulped. "Okay. Then you won't."
