Alcohol may be legal when at the beach but underage drinking still was illegal. We stood there immobile, I assumed we looked exactly how a deer in headlights would look except our vision was slightly blurry so we probably looked intoxicated.
"Get over here ladies." Instructed the police officer. I recognized his voice but I couldnt see his face in the dark from the distance we were at. We hesitated but began walking slowly to the officer and the group of guys. Ashlees hand was in mine.
"So who's the designated driver then?" I heard the officer asking the group as we got close.
"I am." Replied beanie guy.
"You havent been drinking?"
"No..."
"Well blow into this." The officer pulled out a breathalizer and held it out for beanie guy.
"C'mon Richard. Last year you were out here drinking with us!" The 'shes not hot' guy whined incrediously.
"This is my career now Mark. I have to take it seriously. You're lucky you're dealing with me and not my partner Daley. He would have all you cuffed and would be calling your parents to pick you up. Now just blow the breathalizer so I can let you guys go home." It was hard to see his face in the dark and my vision was cloudy from drinking the alcohol had suddenly hit me harder than before I was no longer buzzing. I looked at Ashlee and she seemed as though it hit her harder too as she swayed next to me.
Beanie blew the breathizer and when he finished the small machine beeped and the officer read the numbers.
"Yeah okay, go ahead and go home. Are the girls with you guys?" The officer asked his flashlight shining back on us. My hand instictfully went to my eyes to block out the bright light.
"Nah." Beanie grumbled.
"What? They can come with us!" Gabe argued.
"There's not enough room in the truck." Beanie said more angrily now. Obviously he was still upset about Ashlee rejecting him earlier.
"They can sit on our laps!" Gabe was saying completely unaware in his drunkeness that beanie didnt want us coming.
"It's okay. We'll call an uber." I said loudly. Perhaps too loudly my voice didnt mask the fact that I had been drinking.
"Get in the cruiser girls. I'll give you both a ride home." The officer said. The group of boys began to pile into the truck and pull out of the beach. Me and Ashlee followed the officer back to his cruiser and and we slid in the backseat. The seats were covered in plastic and there wasnt any seatbelts available. There was a metal mesh screen blocking the backseat from the front.
When the officer got into the cruiser the over head light above him shined on his blonde hair and face. I definitly recognized him as the angry officer Harrison that had been at my house earlier today. We made eye contact in the rearview mirror.
"Your dad know you went to party tonight?" He asked as he turned on the vehicle.
"No." I answered honestly. His eyes stared into mine from the mirror for a moment before the over head light turned out and he put the vehicle in gear after clearing his throat.
As we drove I tried not to fall asleep in the backseat. I was so tired and the motion of the car made my stomach feel light. Ashlee had not been as successful. I heard her breathing deepen and when I looked over to her she was fast asleep her lips parted slightly as her head rested on the window.
The car came to a stop quicker than I had anticipated. He put the car in park and looked back at me in the rear view mirror.
"Thanks for the ride home." I said politely. He didnt answer or say anything. He opened his door and got out of the cruiser. I reached for the door to open it but couldn't realizing that of course someone cant just open the door from inside the back seat of a police vehicle.
