Emma and Regina had known each other from the day Emma was born. Regina had been born prematurely, two months before Emma and once Emma was born their mothers made sure that they'd spend time together. Their mothers, Mary and Cora, had met in college and been great friends since then, so clearly, their daughters had to be friends as well.

Unfortunately, when Emma was only 3 months old her parents got into a fatal accident which left Emma to the cares of her grandmother. Cora was always there to support them and once Regina turned one and Cora had to go back to work, she started to spend her days with Emma and her grandmother.

As the years passed and as predicted, the two girls became inseparable, they were always spending time with the other and their mission after turning five was to annoy Regina's older sister, Zelena, all the time.

"We can't tell anyone, Regina. Remember what grandma Allison told us," Emma reminded her one night during a sleepover.

"Yes, Emma don't worry. It'll be our secret..." Regina replied.

"Does it scare you?" Emma asked suddenly making Regina look at her.

"Not really. I think it's kinda cool, don't you? I mean, not everyone can talk to ghosts I think it's a pretty special thing," Regina said smiling.

"But grandma said a lot of children could talk to ghosts, so it's not really that special," Emma reminded her.

"She also said only a few were able to still talk to them once they were adults, but I have a feeling that you are going to be one of them," Regina told her surely.

"Why?"

"Because your grandma is one of them. She is special and so are you," she said sitting up, "promise me something though."

"Anything."

"When I stop seeing them you'll still take me on your adventures."

"If you stop seeing them. And I promise," Emma said smiling at Regina.

"Hello, Emma. Ready for your first day of school?" Cora asked when she saw Emma and her grandmother at the school gates while dropping Regina off.

"No," Emma mumbled not letting go of her grandmother's hand.

"Sweetheart, I will be back in a few hours to pick you up. Besides, Regina's going too," Allison told her grandmother prompting Emma to notice Regina for the first time.

"You are?"

"Uh uh. My mother said we are in the same class so we won't be alone," Regina said with a smile, "come on Emma, or else we are going to be late!" Regina grabbed Emma's pulling her towards the school, "bye mom!" she yelled at her mother while Emma just waved the two adults goodbye.

"Have fun!" Cora and Allison shouted back in unison.

"They are going to be okay, right?" Allison asked with a somewhat worried look.

"Don't worry, Allison. They are going to take care of each other," Cora told her placing a reassuring hand on Allison's shoulder.

Regina and Emma were at Cora's backyard discussing which animal was best. Regina was defending the lion while Emma defended the swan.

"Lions are best, Emma. Well, lionesses, they do most of the work. They don't need lions to make things for them, they're independent," Regina said nodding, "You're just saying swans are better because it's your name," she finished rolling her eyes.
