After a week of Regina staying with Emma, they decided that it was time to bring Allison home. Jefferson had not come back and they thought it would be safe. The three of them fell into an easy routine. During the week Emma would wake up before anyone else and cook breakfast, then after eating they would drop Allison to school then they'd go to the bar where Regina would work from her computer. Whenever Regina's presence was needed at a meeting Emma would tag along. Then they'd pick Allison from school and hang out. At the weekend Regina would take care of all the cooking and they'd just go for a walk in the park or do some other activity together.
Two weeks turned in two months. Two months in which they acted like nothing was wrong. All the past things between Emma and Regina seemed to be forgotten and they were finally the best friends that everyone missed. On Friday's they started to go over to Regina's house to have dinner with her parents, one thing that Emma made sure to happen because she didn't want Regina to miss time with them. She questioned Regina as to why she was still living with them and Regina said that it was mostly because it made everyone happy. She and her parents were always very close and Regina was almost never home anyway so paying for a house of her own would be a waste of money. So her parents proposed that if she had such a problem staying with them for free she could pay some sort of a rent.
By the third month, Emma started to see Jefferson in her dreams. He'd haunt her every dream and that caused Emma to stay awake. One night, Regina went to the kitchen and found Emma making coffee.
"You do know that if you drink that now you will not get any sleep right?" she asked leaning against the counter prompting Emma to look at her while nursing her mug with both hands.
"That is kind of the point, Regina," Emma replied emotionless making Regina frown.
"What is it?"
"I... I dream of him or I don't know, I guess it probably really is him. Every time I fall asleep he is there and the worst part is that it's always the same dream," she said looking down. Regina didn't say anything waiting for Emma to elaborate, "in the dream... It starts with him talking to me, we are in the street where he raped me, it doesn't happen like that time though. He is talking to me, being nice and then we are here, with Allison just like a family. That's when I start to realise that he is a mistake and that him being in my life is a mistake and I tell him that... He just loses it and grabs Allison and disappears. I look everyone for Allison and when I finally find her she... she isn't with him. She's with you but-" she says but a sob made her stop talking, "when I find you two... You're on the floor, unconscious and I call the ambulance but they are too late. You die, Regina," she told her crying. Regina wrapped Emma in her arms and held her.
"I am not dead. I am here," Regina reassured Emma. That night Regina told Emma that she would sleep next to her and if she had the dream again she would be right by her side to soothe her worries. They laid in bed together facing each other when Regina talks again, "I like you."
"I like you too," Emma said smiling.
"I like you more than as a friend, Emma."
Emma sighed, "I like you too."
"You do?" Emma nodded, "then why aren't we doing anything about it? If we like each other why aren't we together?"
"Because it would make things way harder than they need to be. We are at a good place right now Regina. We are happy now."
"What if we are happier together?"
"What if we are not? What if it doesn't work out and we ruin everything?"
"If it doesn't work out we'll get over the awkward 'after the break up' phase and we'll be back to this. I am willing to take the chance."
"Well, I am not. I'm sorry Regina, but I am not risking this."
