It was a beautiful sunny day. The coffee shop was bright and filled with conversation of lunch goers. Two people were seated in a small table across each other, quieter than most couple..
"Here are your keys."Jennie reached out from her purse."I think you left a spare copy in my car. I can have it sent to your office, if you'd like. I had to take an Taxi here, so i don't have it with me."She says as she stared at the table."Sorry,"she whispered.
Lisa looked at the keys as if it were offending her. Those keys once held a promise of the future, of tomorrows together. That is not going to happen anymore."I'm not in a rush, but thanks,"Lisa's voice was cold, her face stoic.
Jennie looked up to Lisa, and her heart broke into pieces knowing that she is the reason why Lisa looked mess. Her eyes were red rimmed and she had bags under her eyes.
"I'm sorry Lisa..."Jennie whispered."I wish you can give me a chance to explain,"
Lisa laughed sarcastically.
"And what would you tell me? That you fell out of love with me?" she leaned in and spoke sharply.
"This is bullshit Jennie. Tell me, why are you breaking up with me? Tell me.."
Jennie closed her eyes and spoke.
"You would not understand if you're fuming right now.."
"Then make me understand!!!"Lisa slammed her palm on the table, loud enough to make the other customers look at them..
"I can't be with you. And yes, i have fallen out of love with you. We never see each other anymore. This....this thing that we have, it's falling apart. We're falling apart." Jennie spat out.
"And thats the answer? To break up?" Lisa is mad. She was giving such angry energy that one would think she will explode.
"Yes..." Jennie looked at Lisa squarely in the eyes."Yes Lisa, because i am no longer happy. You tried, i tried, but its not working."
"But Jennie, why?..." Lisa shifted into begging mode."Why can't we just... take a break? And after that, i promise i will make it up to you and i will make things right.."
"We can't just do that.."
"But w--"
"I'm leaving Lisa," Jennie proclaimed, cutting Lisa off. "I'm going to New Zealand. I need to be away. I am drowning and i can't even save myself, and for that reason i have to go."she gathered her phone and purse as she got up. "All i wanted today is to give you your house keys, and i guess i will send whatever else i can find.."
"That's it?" Lisa asked bitterly.
"Three years of being together and this is the send off you give me?"
"It's for the best. You'll see, it's for the best," Jennie's voice cracked. She wanted to touch Lisa one last time but she knew, it will stop her from leaving. She walked as fast as she could and only looked back when she stepped out of the coffee shop. Lisa was just staring into nothing and she looked like she was going to break down into tears.
Jennie hurriedly turned into a corner and got into the waiting car. As soon as she got in, the driver spoke. "Did you tell her?" Jennie broke down into tears as the car moved. She turned to Jisoo, her bestfriend since childhood. "I told her the half truth.."
"Which is?"Jisoo inquired.
"That we don't even see each other anymore, that i was unhappy and that it was for the best that we ended it and that i was leaving." Jennie looked out at the window still sobbing.
"But did you say why?"Jisoo gently asked, pulling into the parking lot.
"No."
Jisoo just nodded. "This came for you by the way. I opened it since i know you were expecting documents.."Jisoo says while handing her a piece of paper.
Jennie unfolded the paper. The words Stage 4 Brain Cancer, and 2 months left to live all jumped into Jennie's periphery. She folded the paper and leaned back.
"I'm so tired Jisoo, i want to rest.."Jennie closed her eyes.
"But we should go to the airport before Lisa gets nosy. My family is waiting for me there. How long do we have?"
"We have 3 hours till our flight." Jisoo said. "We're just crossing the lot Jennie, and we should be getting into the boarding area right away."
"Then we should go.."
Jennie got out from the car and grabbed a set of keys from her compartment. Jisoo looked at her questionly. "I told her i had it. But i didn't want to give it back. Will you send it to her after....after i'm gone?"
Jisoo looked at Jennie, trying her best to be calm. "Of course, i will.."
Jennie looked up at the sky.
"Forgive me, Lisa.."she whispered, and started walking towards her end..
