Summer Nights

Mickey Mouse

Finally, it was summer at last. I was sitting inside the Curtis house watching Mickey with Two-bit.

I was getting a little hungry, so I decided to make myself breakfast.

I got up off the couch and said while walking to the kitchen, "Two-bit, you want anything to eat?"

He shrugged and said back, "I'm good."

I walked in the kitchen and began to get pots and pans from the cabinets.

Darry, who was sitting on a chair, asked me, "Shaylin, when did you get here? I thought you were at your house."

I smiled looking over my shoulder and said, "I was, but I left early this morning."

Truth is I only left early because my parents were still sleeping.

They've been fighting about anything and everything they can think of.

First it was about work, then about me and my education, then Secret affairs, and now they've actually started yelling and abusing me.

It started last week, and it's been going on non-stop. So, I've been getting home super late and leaving super early.

Nobody in the gang knows this has been happening..not even Two.

I'm just afraid and nervous to tell them.

Darry nodded his head at my last remark as he left the kitchen.

I could hear the boys join Two-bit in the living room talking.

I grabbed a coke from the fridge and took my eggs and toast with jelly spread on it to the living room.

I sat beside Soda on the couch as
Two-bit turned around on the floor, and gave me his cheesy cute smile.

I smiled back.

As I eat my breakfast slowly, I continue watching Mickey Mouse on tv.

This was Two-bit and my favorite episode of it.

I finally finished eating and washed my plates as well as the dishes.

I was still sipping on my coke can.

I heard from the living room, "See ya later, Shaylin. We're going to work."

I quickly walked in the living room and said, "Uniforms?"

Soda and Steve looked down at their clothes and said, "Check."

I then looked at Darry and said, "Bills?"
He said back to me, "Check."

I then replied, "Car keys."

Darry patted his pocket where they were supposed to be but weren't.

I grabbed them off a nearby shelf and tossed them at him.

He gladly caught it and said, "Bye."
I gave him the same message back as they all left.

I looked back at Two-bit and asked myself in my head, "Should I sit beside him or go on a walk"

As much as I wanted to stay, I also needed time for myself to clear my head.

I then say to him, "Hey, I'm going to...I'll be back soon."

As I opened the door, I heard a confused voice ask, "Hey, where ya going?"

I answer, "On a walk."

He then asked me, "Don't you want to stay and watch Mickey with me? It's our favorite episode."

I looked back at the door as I said, "I don't know, Two-bit, I kind of wanted-."

He then stood up and asked,
"Shay, what's wrong?"

I said to him, "Nothing."

I then looked back at the door and closed it continuing, "I guess I'll stay."

I sat beside him as he sat back down and in seconds, he was already tuned in with the tv.

I kept staring at him as he stared at the tv wondering:

I wish he would look at me like that...
