fire

when you suffer through a heartbreak
it feels like your chest is on fire
and your heart is melting.
yet your skin is cold
and you have to pull your windbreaker closer to your frame
as the rain comes down harder.
nobody can see the tears running down your face
but they see it in your red, puffy eyes.
he promised he would stay
but he left.

you long for your chest to burn with a different fire;
you wish you could grasp the bottle of whiskey
and drown your sorrows in the burning alcohol.
your throat burns with fire
from your shallow, gulped breaths
and you choke back a thunderous sob.

you hope he feels the same fire in his chest
but he has a new flame.
his chest fills with fire
as he places his mouth on another woman.
