{ Chapter Nineteen }
"Alexis, let's go! We're late!" I call towards the house as I buckle Noah in his carrier.
"I'm here, I'm here!" She laughs, climbing in the backseat beside my child.
I get into the driver's side and pull out of the driveway, making my way to Alexis's new school. Eliza called yesterday, and the principal said that we could come and tour it before we enrolled Alexis in.
At the school, I grab the whole carrier and take it inside with me as we enter the building. "Hi, my name is Grace Miller. I'm scheduled for a tour for Alexis Miller. I'm her sister." I tell the secretary when we reach the desk.
She smiles sweetly and says, "Ah, yes. Here you are. Just take these stickers and wear them as you go." She hands us two visitor stickers with a picture of a sun on them.
We thank her and start walking down the first hallway we see. "It's kind of... cute, don't you think?" I say, looking at the painted walls. It looks like the students painted it.
Alexis holds in a laugh as we continue. A teacher walking past looks into the baby carrier and sees Noah. "Aw, what a cute little baby. Be sure to tell the mother I said he's just cute as a button." She grins.
"Oh, actually, he's mine." I say awkwardly, biting my lower lip.
The woman straightens, coughing. "Oh. Well." She shoots us a disapproving look before rushing off.
I feel a blush creeping up my neck and sit on a nearby bench. "I cannot believe that just happened."
"It's okay, Grace." Alexis says thoughtfully, touching my arm. "She just didn't know. Don't worry. You're perfect to me." She sits beside me and hugs me tightly.
I laugh, kissing her forehead, and nod. "Of course. You're right. Let's keep going."

After we finish the tour, I take Alexis out for ice cream. She takes Noah to a table as I order two vanilla cones and a kid's vanilla cup for Noah.
"How old is he?" An older woman asks behind me.
I look at her and smile, saying, "Almost three months."
She smiles sweetly, gazing over at Noah, who is being tickled by Alexis. "He's beautiful."
"Thank you." I say to the woman, then to the cashier as she hands me the ice cream.
"Oh, let me take care of that for you. I know how costly a new baby can be especially at such a young age." She chuckles lightly, handing the young cashier a debit card.
"You didn't have to do that." I smile at her.
"It's my pleasure." The old woman smiles before paying for her own.
Sitting across from my sister, I take my son from her so she can eat. I lick my cone slowly, trying to eat mine and feed Noah his at the same time. Ice cream is all over his face and hands. He laughs loudly, clapping his sticky hands together.
"Ew." I laugh, cleaning him up with a baby wipe. "You're such a mess."
"You know, that woman was at the school." Alexis says quietly. I glance up at her with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah. She saw when the first teacher complimented Noah."
I smile, looking over my shoulder as she exits the parlor. "Wow."

Later at home, I am in the living room with Noah while Caleb takes a shower. Eliza and Michael are both working, and Alexis is taking a nap.
I take a deep breath, turning the TV off, and lean my head back to the sky. "Lord, if you're really out there somewhere and care about me, show me a sign. I need to know you're still on my side."
As soon as I am finished with my prayer, the clouds shift and a ray of sunlight shines through the glass door, landing right on our newest family portrait. It includes all of us, even Noah.
"Thank you." I whisper, kissing my baby on the head. "Thank you."
