Chapter Thirteen

Someone clearing their throat brought the two back from the daze they’d found themselves caught up in for a moment.

“Having fun?” Josh asked.  Julie held her hand over her mouth and snickered beside him, finding the situation entirely funny.

Martin rolled his eyes, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure you don’t.  Are ya’ll actually coming to the coach this time, or are you going to stand where everyone and their mothers can see you and make out?”

Martin grabbed Brynne’s hand and the two followed behind Josh and Julie back to the coach.

Once there, everyone got comfortable and Martin turned to Josh, “What’s left today besides practice and qualifying?”

“I don’t think anything... you don’t have another appearance until tomorrow after final practice and then another one on Sunday morning before the race.”

“At least I’m running good so far this weekend, so the ‘where is our champ?’ questions may be kept to a minimum.”

“And if you get the pole they might not even mention your lackluster season thus far, especially seeing as it’s Dega and –”

“And we all know how I run at Dega.  Blah, blah, blah Josh, that didn’t help me at all at Daytona!”

Josh rolled his eyes and turned towards Julie, “See what I have to put up with day in and day out?”

That night one of the crew guys had a Dega-style bash, composed of food and beer.  Lots of beer.  Brynne and Julie wandered around, being introduced to many of the drivers, their girlfriends, families and the crew guys and laying off of the beer, knowing they still had to make it to the hotel after the so-called “lot party” was over.

But the same couldn’t be said for Martin and Josh.

They drank like fishes; like they would wake up in the morning and never see a drop of alcohol again in their lives.

By the time the party had started to wind down and Josh and Martin had drunkenly told the girls they were ready to go, Brynne and Julie had to lead them back to Martin’s coach to ensure they wouldn’t stumble into something or fall along the way.

Julie ended up dropping Josh onto the couch, hoping he’d stay there all night and not roll off onto the floor – that could leave a nasty bump if he smashed his head on the table right next to the couch.  Brynne, however, was able to get Martin back to his bedroom before setting him down on his bed.

He muttered something before falling into an alcohol-induced slumber, and Brynne knew tomorrow was going to be a long day for him with the monster hangover he’d be dealing with come morning.

“So things went good, today?”

Brynne suppressed her smile, “What are you talking about, Julie?”

“Oh girl!  Stop messing around.  Josh and I caught you and Martin practically making out like a bunch of hormone-driven teenagers in the motorcoach lot.”

“It was just a kiss...”

“Just a kiss my ass!  That was way more than just a kiss.  But you don’t have to tell me anything, besides... was it good?”

Brynne turned her head from looking out the window and grinned at Julie, “Of course it was!”
