Chapter Four

Brynne stared at her computer screen, for once wishing that she’d had to work that night instead of getting her rare night off.  It’d been a half hour since she’d seen “MTJ” sign on, and for some reason she had hesitated talking to him, instead making herself go invisible as if she weren’t there in the first place.

KingDaddysGrl: Hiding?
FutureMrsTruexJr: Yeah.  Yeah, I am.
KingDaddysGrl: Silly, silly girl.
KingDaddysGrl: Mind if I ask why?

She thought about it for a second; why was she invisible?  What was she hiding from?  Him.  How much “he’d” been on her mind lately even though she knew nothing about him.

Yeah.

That’s what she was scared of.

FutureMrsTruexJr: Um...
KingDaddysGrl: Let me guess...
KingDaddysGrl: It has to do with the guy who claims to be Martin, right?

Brynne laughed, knowing she was just that transparent, making her wonder if she was only that transparent to people who knew her well, or if everyone could tell.

FutureMrsTruexJr: You’d be right.
KingDaddysGrl: I think you should give him a chance; he may be hot or something.
FutureMrsTruexJr: Of course that’d be the first thing you’d think of...
KingDaddysGrl: Of course.

She just shook her head, grinning at the computer screen.  She knew that Julie was the only one she could talk to and trust with all this stuff that was going on.

KingDaddysGrl: I say you stop hiding.
FutureMrsTruexJr: Why?
KingDaddysGrl: Because you never know who this guy really is.  Or know nothing about him.  You two might have a lot in common.
KingDaddysGrl: At least you know he has to like NASCAR and Martin with the screen name he has.  You have that in common.

Brynne sighed, knowing that she was going to do it, not only because she was curious, but because Julie was right, she did have a lot in common with this guy, it seemed, and she wanted to find out more.  God help her for being curious.

FutureMrsTruexJr: Fine.
FutureMrsTruexJr: I’ll become uninvisible.
FutureMrsTruexJr: But I’m blaming you.
KingDaddysGrl: What the hell did I do this time?
FutureMrsTruexJr: Nothing, yet.  But if anything goes wrong, I’m blaming you.
KingDaddysGrl: Fine, blame away.

Opening up her buddy list, she paused for a moment, just staring.  She didn’t know what was holding her back.

Rather, she did, just didn’t want to admit what it was.

Admit that she’d rather throw herself into work and her dedication to NASCAR and her job, than to put herself on the line, and have a chance to get hurt; to be rejected.

She really didn’t take rejection and hurt well.  In fact, every time something could go wrong, she tended to run.

“No running now,” she murmured, as she clicked the little eye next to her screen name, bringing herself to once again appear online.  And, she waited.

She didn’t have to wait long.

MTJ: Early for you...
FutureMrsTruexJr: Had the night off from work.
FutureMrsTruexJr: It does happen every once in awhile.
MTJ: Well, I’m glad...
MTJ: Means I don’t have to wait so long to talk to you...
FutureMrsTruexJr: Oh, talk to me?
MTJ: Yeah, like we’re doing right now, ya know?

Brynne felt her face flush a little bit at the stupid question she’d asked, but she hadn’t meant for it to come out the way it had.  She’d been curious as to what he wanted to talk to her about.

FutureMrsTruexJr: That’s not how I meant for it to come out.
FutureMrsTruexJr: I was just curious as to what you’d wanted to talk about.
MTJ: Oh.
MTJ: Well, nothing specific.
MTJ: Just to talk.

Breathing a quick sigh of relief, it didn’t stay for long, when the thought of what conversations they could have fluttered through her mind.

She was nervous.

Very, very nervous.

MTJ: Tell me something about yourself.
FutureMrsTruexJr: I already told you my name, you’ve told me nothing.
MTJ: I told you my name, you just don’t believe me.

Her lips pursed.  The claiming to be Martin again.  Hmm.  She’d wished he wouldn’t have just said that.  She didn’t know whether to ignore it or try to get him to admit who he really was.

FutureMrsTruexJr: Where are you from?
MTJ: Born in Jersey, live in North Carolina and am currently in a state of sheer boredom in Mooresville.
MTJ: What about you, Brynne?
FutureMrsTruexJr: Born and raised in New York City and currently living in Boston.
MTJ: Do you have that Bostonian accent?
FutureMrsTruexJr: I’m starting to pick it up... why?
MTJ: No reason.
FutureMrsTruexJr: If you asked, there must be a reason...

There was a hesitance, once again.  Just like the first time they’d talked.  And, it made her frown, slightly.

MTJ: Well...
FutureMrsTruexJr: You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.  Really, it’s not a problem...
MTJ: No, it’s not a problem.
MTJ: It’s just...
MTJ: I find it hot.

Brynne’s head dipped slightly, her dimples coming out significantly, as she shook her head.  She could definitely feel the heat in her cheeks.

FutureMrsTruexJr: Well, that’s nice...
MTJ: Yeah...

They talked well into the night – Brynne relaying everything to Julie, who was positively eating it up – and before either realized, the sun was beginning to rise.

MTJ: Wow.
FutureMrsTruexJr: It’s late.  Like really, really late.
MTJ: Yeah, it really is.
FutureMrsTruexJr: I’m going to be a bitch to drag out of bed anytime before like five this afternoon.
MTJ: I don’t intend to get up anytime before that, either.

Neither said anything for a moment; at a standstill.

FutureMrsTruexJr: I better go, though.
FutureMrsTruexJr: I actually have to work tonight, not that I want to.
MTJ: By the way, where do you work?

Brynne grinned.

FutureMrsTruexJr: That’s for me to know, and you to find out.
MTJ: Ooh, mysterious!
FutureMrsTruexJr: You bet your ass!  You’re not the only one who can be mysterious when they want to be.

That night – or rather, morning – she was able to go to sleep with a smile on her face.  And, it was all because of him.
