jackson had suggested (more like insisted) on picking jaebum up and driving him to school this morning, and even though he didn't like the idea of receiving a special treatment for his birthday, jaebum gladly agreed to it because he wasn't in the mood for smelly bus rides today.

the ride to school took only about ten minutes which seemed like a waste of gas, but sitting in the passenger seat, humming along to bigbang and listening to jackson giggling about a special someone whose name he refused to say (jaebum was pretty damn sure that person was a mister mark tuan, but it was kind of adorable to watch jackson's cheeks turn bright pink whenever he accidently almost said „mark" or „he", so he kept quiet) was a nice way to start your day.

„so after the last party, ma- uh, m-my crush texted me and used heart emojis and i–"

„ya, you took the wrong turn." jaebum interrupted the blonde, gesturing to his left with his index finger.

„like, i started giggling and my face got hot? like an actual teenage girl from the movies, i never had a crush like that... i must have resembled a tomato!"

„dude, are you ignoring me?"

„huh? oh, i, uhm–"

but then jaebum recognized the route they were on and the place it would lead them to. „you're driving to jinyoung's, aren't you?"

the mood in the car suddenly dropped from relaxed to awkward. why didn't jackson just tell him before?

„oh yeah, i asked him if he needed a ride too, that's cool right?" jackson glanced at jaebum but quickly focused back on the road.

„we haven't talked yet since..", jaebum sighed deeply. „i don't know where we are as friends right now."

„where do you wanna be?" jackson asked but didn't even give jaebum a chance to answer. „you still wanna be friends, right? i know the situation was bad, but that doesn't mean it's the end of you, does it? the end of all of us? please tell me you still want jinyoung in your life."
he sounded kind of worried, as if he had been suppressing how serious the situation had been, and as if he was geniuenly scared his best friends wouldn't make up again.

„of course i want him in my life, he's my best friend.."

jackson's face lit up immediately, the euphoria finding its way back into his voice. „perfect, jinyoungie said the exact same thing!! oh, there he is!"

jinyoung was standing at the corner of his street, noticeably struggling to hold three cups of starbucks drinks in his hands when he spotted them. jaebum couldn't figure out his expression but his body looked tense, the same as himself probably.

jackson slowed down, stopping the car about a meter in front of jinyoung who just stood there, not sure what to do.
„get outta here and hug it out with him, dude." jaebum tried arguing but the blonde had already opened his car door for him.
he got out and jinyoung started walking towards him.

„need a hand?"

„please!" jaebum grabbed two coffees and handed one of them to jackson through the car window, then turned back to jinyoung.

„so.. happy birthday.."

„oh. right.. thank you."

„jesus!" they heard coming from the car. „can this get any more awkward? hug it out man!" jackson shouted noticeably frustrated.

the boys smiled awkwardly at eachother, both feeling slightly uncomfortable with the situation, but both also wanting to get over it. jinyoung was the first to open his arms and jaebum let his best friend embrace him.
they knew they still had to talk things out, but for now a hug was enough.

they got back in the car and jackson started driving, all of them sipping on their coffees while enjoying the song on the radio.

„dude, you missed the turn again." jaebum stated confused.

„no i didn't. you don't even know where i'm heading." jackson and jinyoung giggled, while their friend just sighed in defeat.

„where are you guys taking me?"

„well", jinyoung started, „we figured you didn't wanna sit in math class on your birthday - or ever, that is - so we planned a little trip to the beach."

part of jaebum was glad he wouldn't have to go to school today, but the other part kind of hoped to see youngjae. that part was also anxious to see him, though, so maybe it was for the better to avoid school completely.

„thank you guys."
