The next day, we went to a nearby studio to record. I've never been to one this nice before and was impressed with all the equipment; not even knowing how to use most of it. Omar and I sat on one of the big leather couches, and I showed him one of my song ideas. We worked for a couple of hours on the beat and the lyrics and decided it was ready to be recorded. Diego mostly slept and ate candy in the corner the whole time. Occasionally he would make comments on whether something sounded right. I honestly kind of wish he would have talked to me more. Weird, right?
For some reason, I was having an off day and kept on messing up while recording. Omar suggested we should take a break. Diego could tell I was frustrated with myself.
"Hey, give yourself a break. You're doing fine."
I gave him a weak smile.
Diego said, laughing. "I wish I were in your shoes at 16. I couldn't rap for shit then."
"Haha, thanks. I'm just really tired. Not that I should be complaining; you must be exhausted right now because of the tour."
"It's rough, yeah. I've gone days with only getting two hours of sleep each night, but you know with a Five Hour Energy it's technically seven, which I don't recommend taking by the way."
I laughed "Well, I'm already addicted to coffee, so yeah I'm trying to lower my caffeine intake too."
"Seems like we both need to catch up on sleep, but hey I wouldn't change it for anything. You'll get used to this life soon," Diego said. He pointed his eyes up at me with a grin on his face. "Wanna hit?" He pulled his juul out of his pocket. I rolled my eyes.
"What? I feel like you would be into it," he said.
I grabbed it out of his hand, took a big inhale, and blew multiple smoke rings in his face.
Diego flinched back. "And I guess I was right. Fuck, where did you learn how to do that?"
"My boyfriend and I used to vape all the time together. He got me into it. I thought it was pretty stupid, but it's low key fun. I haven't done it since I left school now that I think about it."
Diego looked deep into my eyes. His expression of deep thought made me feel like he could feel the sadness in them. My sadness about missing home and Jack and longing for some of those memories back. He didn't say anything; just continued listening to my words. The moment was interrupted when Omar came in and saying we should finish recording.
The second session went better; maybe because I was buzzed. I also couldn't stop from laughing at everything, which amused Diego.
We finally finished recording around 5 pm. Omar suggested we go out to dinner with Austin and some other of his friends that were in town.
My only concern was the paparazzi and the fans. Austin was right when he told me it doesn't look good for a worldwide famous 16-year-old girl to be hanging out with rappers that are years older than her. Whether it's right or not people are still going to talk, and in the back of my mind I knew with Diego here, I don't even want to know what the headlines will be on the Daily Mail Snapchat story tomorrow.
I threw on my windbreaker, and we walked quickly back to the car. We drove to Shake Shack, which in my opinion isn't the type of place you go when you want to avoid being seen. When we got there the crowds around us were already so big, Diego suggested we pick up the food and bring it back to the hotel.
