Chapter 27- Devastation always gets the better of me

"Ok, so have you ever had a boyfriend?" asks Astrid, "yes" I answer, "I did, but he was a jerk, he beat up my best friend" I say quietly, hoping Rory is listening, "beating up a girl, that's harsh" I laugh, "no no, my best friends a boy, his name is Rory" she whistles, "is he cute?" she grins, I go quiet, looking at the dirt, "oh my god he is!" now I hope he isn't watching, "we're just friends" I insist, although a part of me wishes we were more, "ok, have you ever had a boyfriend?" I ask, she nods, her head high, "what was his name?"

"Ashton" I laugh, "was your couple name battery?" I giggle, "what the hell? why would it be battery?" she asks, "double A!" I shriek, laughing hysterically, "shhh! you'll wake up your sister" she hisses, "no way, she sleeps like a log, she wouldn't wake up if there was an earthquake" I giggle, she laughs to, "well" I say, getting up, "I'm exhausted, I'm gonna go to bed now" I say, "ok, I'll stay up and stand guard" she says, I nod, "night"

"Night" I climb into my sleeping bag and fall asleep as soon as my head hits the ground.

"Guys! Guys wake up!" Astrid shakes me violently, arousing me from my peaceful slumber, I sit up straight away, "what is it? What's happening?" I whisper, looking around in a panic, "There's something out there, I heard it, Forest, help I scared I want to go home!" she starts crying and she clings to me, a look of total terror in her eyes, "it's ok, we'll be fine, I'm right here" then I hear it, a howl that is so inhuman it sends shivers through my entire body, making my head feel dizzy and my legs weak, "oh no, Forest, that's it, that's the thing, what is it? do you know?"

"Calm down, its way to far away, we're fine, as long as we-" I am cut off as a huge bear slash lizard thing jumps out of the bushes and attacks Astrid, I will never forget her scream, it tore me apart, I watched as the thing tore her to bits, all I could do was stand there and scream, I didn't even think about Sonny, all I could think about was that she had saved me and I couldn't save her, the girl who was the most afraid of these horrific creatures lost her life to them, I cried and cried, not even thinking that if I didn't move I would die, "Forest!" I look up and see two of the creatures lurking towards me, I scream at turn to run, I grab Sonny by the hand and drag her away, then I remembered Astrid, "Astrid! we have to go back for her" I slow down, ready to run in the opposite direction, "Forest no, she's dead, there's nothing you can do, we have to keep moving, or we'll end up like her!" I sob and keep running, the tears running down my cheeks like a steady stream, I hear a scream all of a sudden and my stomach drops, I see Sonny being dragged away by one of the creatures, "Sonny!" I'm not about to let her have the same fate as Astrid, I run towards her, loading my bow as I run, I shoot the thing square in its awful, scaly muzzle, it retracts, letting go of Sonny's foot, it shakes it's head trying to remove the arrow, I grab Sonny by the hands, I help her up quickly, and she climbs up onto my back, I sprint away, I can hear the mutts behind us as we run, me chest is tight and my legs burn, but I know that death is on our tail, I run and run until we reach the Cornucopia, I run towards it, I realise that we can't climb just as I reach it, Sonny's leg is too sore, I run into the mouth, I don't know why, I wasn't thinking rationally, I didn't think that if I ran into the mouth of the Cornucopia that I would be trapped, "Forest! We're stuck, you've trapped us!" squeals Sonny, I look around desperately, searching for a way out to no avail, all cameras are probably on us at the moment, waiting for us to die, cannons ready, but as soon as the mutts set foot inside the Cornucopia, the drop dead, I stare, open mouthed as the second one sets foot inside and drops dead just like the first, everyone will expect us to jump about cheering and hugging each other, but instead I sink to the ground and have a mental breakdown, I wail hysterically, because I probably just lost the closest thing I had to a female friend and I am so relieved that we weren't just ripped apart by wild man eating bear-lizards, "Forest?" asks Sonny cautiously, "Forest are you ok?" she sits down next to me and I shake my head, still crying uncontrollably, "I'm so sorry" she whispers, hugging me, I hug her back, I suddenly want mom so badly that my entire body aches, I stop crying abruptly, I look at Sonny and plant a kiss on her forehead, I stand up and scream, as loud as I can, I couldn't care less who heard me, I scream until I'm hoarse, I grab fistfuls of my own hair and tug til my head hurts, I through a tantrum, kicking things over and stomping, acting like a complete maniac, "ARE YOU HAPPY?" I scream, "ARE YOU HAPPY, THAT I HAVE NOW, LOST MY GODFORESAKEN MIND! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU I HATE I HATE YOU!!" I pant heavily before collapsing in the dirt, I know that all if Panem was watching me lose my marbles, but it felt good to let myself go, I've been so tense ever since the games started, now I can relax, it's all a matter of if I die, I die, there us nothing I can do to prevent that from happening, and now I have finally accepted that, and it feels good.
