(Name) POV
After Carl died, I could no longer visit his house but I watched as his stuff was carried away. Leo, who had been the reason his father died, stood there happily as he seen all the stuff that would be passed down to him now that Carl is gone. Leo I thought and scowled. I hate him for what he's done to Carl and Markus. I will always hate what he's done.
I seemed more of a son/daughter to Carl than Leo did. This was simply because I would always visit the old man and drink tea with him. I didn't constantly beg for money to buy drugs, because I didn't want his money. The company of the two were enough. Carl was like a father to me, ever since I had volunteered to help him so I earn service learning hours from college. After I even got out of college, I still hung out with him and Markus which I'm still pretty bummed about. I actually liked Markus' company more than anyone else's, despite people saying he was 'only an Android'. I felt something beyond that. I had emotions- feelings regarding how I felt about Markus and Leo had to have ruined it.
I got away from the gate, out of my thoughts and I began to walk. Carl and Markus were the only family I truly experienced. Growing up an orphan and going home to home wasn't all it was pegged to be. This orphan didn't get a happy ending like Annie did. That fictional orphan didn't get treated as bad as I did. All Annie had was a life of luxury and comfort while I had to fight to fit in in a family. Being adopted by an extremely Religious family wasn't all happy as you thought either.
Once they noticed my little interest in their god, they took me back to the orphanage. Another family I had was one where the father smoked red ice and neglected his daughter which I found out wasn't even his real daughter. And to top it all off, he had broken his service Android and kicked me out after I seen his violent tendencies.
Time skip to where I was seventeen and I was able to live on my own. I had a loan and college tuition to pay but I never told Carl about that. I didn't even want to burden him that way, yet he found out and paid some of my college tuition and over half of my loans. He taught me the best way to budget money and I didn't know why until I seen how much money I didn't have to pay.
I never asked, yet Carl did it anyways. You know what he told me when I confronted him about it? "You have a goal, and that is college. Last time Leo's been to school was a high school junior and then he dropped out" Carl had said. I still came, after telling him I didn't need the help.
Markus? He was extraordinary. He seemed more human than most humans I knew. He was compassionate, affectionate when needed, and he even took time to actually care about what everyone needed. Even though Carl was the person he was made to serve, he made sure that every soul he passed was doing alright. That's what I liked about Markus... Before he... Got shot. I don't even know if he died either, which bugged me.
Thinking about all of this, I didn't even realize I was in town by the train station but I continued my walk to nowhere. On days like this where I had thoughts about everything bugging me, Markus was there and I would vent about things as he listened. He'd suggest different ideas to counter mine and we'd have deep discussions about everything and anything that came to mind. If I could see Markus again, I would tell him everything. I'd tell him the emotions I felt about him and how I would never want to let him go again.
As if whatever wish I made was coming true, I bumped into someone. I look up from under my hood and at the person I bumped into. "I'm sorry, I should have looked where I was-" I didn't even have to speak, seeing that face that was the subject of my current thoughts. "Markus..." I whispered and he smiled happily. "(Name), how I missed your presence" he responded and I hugged him. "What happened to you" I mumble, not really asking.
"I cannot tell you that. I can only tell you that I must go" he said quietly. "Can I come with? Where are you going?" I ask him quickly, not wanting Markus to leave again. "You cannot come along. I must go find a place where Androids can be freed" he said, breaking the hug. He began to walk but I wasn't giving up so easily. "I could help you, I don't want to be left alone again" I confessed as he got to a fence and looked inside, going underneath and into an alleyway. I followed him, not giving up as he seemed to be searching for something. "This is not a human place. It's for Androids to be free" he said as he pulled a wooden crate from the wall and staring at a square symbol.
"I could help you Markus, and from the sounds of it, society doesn't even know of this thing. I could be the human there. I can make a difference not only for you, but for the others." I reason, tugging his sleeve as he doesn't answer but continues walking. "Markus please. Don't leave me again" I say as I look at the ground and stop following him. He stopped but didn't turn back, making me sigh. "I get it... Humans... Damn them all right? I'll see you around maybe Markus" I turn on my heel and began to walk, forcing my legs to move.
"Why are you so determined to come with me, (Name)?" Markus asked and I too stopped, not turning as a pained expression was on my face. I didn't say anything, not wanting to cause any further issues. "Answer me (Name). Why do you care so much?" He demanded. I swallowed hard and took a deep breath before speaking. "Because the last bit of a family I ever known is still here. I thought I could stay with you forever once I found out you were still alive... But I was wrong" I said coldly, feeling hurt at my own words. I felt like I wanted to cry, yet I forced a blank stare onto my face and held back all the tears of defeat. Defeat of every memory that was to be burned in the past. Never to resurface again. I balled my hand into a fist, digging my nails into my palm.
"I just don't want you getting hurt because of me. I'm dangerous to be around now. I don't want you getting into trouble because of m-" "save it" I said harshly. "I don't care what excuse you are trying to use, save it. I don't want to hear it. You think I have something to loose? Take a look at me. I'm twenty three, my job is shit and I never had a biological family to fall back on for support. The closest thing I had to a family was fucked up by Leo and now the last person I'd ever find myself caring about is abandoning me. I don't care Markus, I really don't." I say, biting my lip as tears began to spill out of my eyes.
I took a deep breath, hiding the sniffle I wanted to let out. "(Name)..." "Go ahead. Please Markus. I won't try to convince you to let me go with you if you don't want me to" I say in a shaky voice. "(Name), I didn't know... I'm sorry I... I care about you too, I can't loose you. If I lost you, there's no way you'd come back" "And your situation is different? You've became a deviant now. If you die, you won't be brought back either. Besides... I'm sure you don't feel the same emotions as I do. Save it. Every excuse. Every word. Save it" I say with more fresh hot tears rolling down my face.
"I'll visit you (Name). I could come back and make sure you're alright and things could be like old times..." Markus reasoned and I frowned. "What makes you so sure you'll come back to me? That you won't be occupied with this whole Android freedom thing? Don't bother risking it for me. Just... Live your life safely. Maybe next time I could tell you all about how life is going when I see you again. Goodbye Markus" and just like that, I'm walking away with my hands in my pocket. I left the area and just like that, I was left by my lonesome on the road again.
Skipping a few months ahead, I moved out of Detroit and to (state name that isn't Michigan). I heard about Markus leading the Jericho group in their strikes and raids, until one day he was shot and killed. The cause didn't stop with his death, which I was pleased about. The Androids demanding for freedom was bound to happen sooner or later, and I was pleased to know that they were close to getting it. Only, Markus wouldn't be alive to see it. Markus... I wished that I didn't leave him that day. I wished that I tried to make a way for us to stay in touch but I was blind. Too blinded by my abandonment issues to care about how things could have been. Markus may have died... But I'll die too someday. He is no longer immortal, meaning in the next life I can finally be with him.
When I see you again, Markus
Did you feel attacked? Cause I sure did :')
