"So," Charlie began, putting his phone face down on the table before leaning an arm on the table. "How's life?"
Daisy laughed. "Alright. How's life for you?"
"I mean, I'm playing in the Nation Hockey League, I don't think life could get any better," he told her with a smile.
"Yeah, that's fair," she said. "It must be cool."
"Yeah, it's amazing," he agreed. "The best part is getting to know the guys, though. Like Jake. He's one of my best friends."
"I think It'd be fun," Daisy said, somewhat softly, "to get to know a group of people like that."
"I should bring you to meet them sometime. I think you'd really like them," Charlie said, though he sensed her slight mood shift. "You're going to meet J--"
Charlie was cut off by their order being called. Without even asking Daisy, he got up to retrieve it.
Daisy knew what he was going to say. She had known from the start that part of this meeting was to convince her to meet Jake.
She wanted to, she really did. She felt a connection with Jake that she hadn't felt with anyone for a long time, even if they hadn't been talking for long. Really, she was afraid of losing the spark that was there. She was scared that they'd meet and he'd change his mind once he learned what she was really like.
Charlie had barely sat down before Daisy blurted, "I know you want me to meet Jake."
Charlie was quiet for a moment, a little taken aback by the sudden comment. "Yeah, I do." He chose his next words carefully. "He really wants to meet you, Daisy."
"I know he does," she told him, looking down at her lap. "But, I'm scared he's going to hate me when he meets me."
"Daisy, I don't think you could make him hate you if you tried," Charlie said. "You'd think you two have known each other for years. He talks about you all the time. He really, really likes you, and though he denies that he has feelings for you, I think there really is something there. So, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Whether you feel that way or not, you've gotten to know someone that really cares about you, and one meeting isn't going to stop that. But let's not worry about that right now. You should eat."
After taking a moment to take in his words, Daisy simply nodded.
