- chapter 2 -
School had ended twenty minutes ago. The car park was empty and although it was still early the sun had disappeared some time ago and now a chilly breeze dominated the air.
Nonetheless, I had missed the bus.
I got out to call Daniel when I remembered he was at practise. Finally deciding that I had no choice but to walk home, I made my way towards the exit when a car beeped behind me. I turned around just as Louis lowered his car window.
"You missed the bus again?" He grinned, and I smiled back.
"No, I just fancied a half an hour walk home in the cold." I said ironically.
"Do you want a lift?" He asked.
"You live in the opposite direction of my house." I stated, but Louis just shrugged. "Ok then." I said and walked over to the passenger door. I wasn't about to decline his offer.
The warm air of the cold made my body tingle with delight. I loved everything warm and hated everything cold.
"Do you need to go straight home, or do you want to hang out for a bit?" Louis asked hesitantly. I recognised the Louis I had seen during the holidays, and instantly my heart broke slightly. I bit my lip, knowing I should probably say no, however, I nodded my head in agreement.
He pulled up to the drive-thru and we both got coffee. I smiled internally as Louis remembered my usual order. Once we got our coffee he drove for another five minutes and parked in the parking lot of the big outdoor park on the outskirts of town.
Once the engine stopped, I looked up at him, expecting him to get out of the car, but instead he was gazing out of the window as if he was remembering something.
"How was the first day?" I asked, to break the silence that had formed between us. He shrugged.
"It was weird without her." He murmured, looking down at his hands. "That's why I was still in the car park. She always spoke to her teachers at the end of each class, so she was always slightly late out of class. I don't know how many hours of my life I spent waiting for her in the carpark. I was waiting today, unconsciously. Some how I forgot she isn't here anymore..." He sniffled quietly, tears threatening to spill from his eyes. I reached out and took hold of his hands. "I'm sorry." He said, looking up at me. "I know this is probably awkward for you." He attempted a smile.
"It's ok. I don't mind." I said, squeezing his hands and truthfully, I didn't mind at all.
"It's just, you are the only person I feel that I can talk to about this... I have to be strong for my parents." He admitted.
"What about Daniel?" I dared to ask.
"He has his own problems with his parents' divorce. I wouldn't want to burden him. And anyway, Emily was like his little sister, he adored her. Anyway, I've got you and that all I need." He said, staring into my eyes. I knew that there was probably an underlying meaning to his words, but I kept quiet.
"I'm here for you Louis." I said, reaching over to tuck one of his rogue curls behind his ear. I probably shouldn't have done that, but shamefully, I didn't regret that I did.
"It's just... She was my little sister. I was supposed to protect her. She needed me, and I let her down." He crocked with a trembling chin.
"It wasn't your fault Louis." I said, moving closer to him.
"But if I hadn't been in such a hurry, she wouldn't have walked home. She wouldn't have been on the pavement when that car hit the black ice. She would have been safe in my car and not lying dead of the sidewalk." A sob escaped him, and he covered his face in shame with shaking hands.
A piece of my heart broke, seeing him like this. I wrapped my arms around him and held him tight against me. His head was pressed against my chest and I could feel his breath on me. I held him like that until his body stopped shaking.
"I'm sorry Mila." He whispered, pulling away from me. He wiped away his tears and avoided my gaze.
"Don't be." I said, smiling at him. "I'm here for you and I'll keep saying it until you stop apologising." I said, and he chuckled.
That's when I realised I had to tell him.
If this person had something planned, then it would affect Louis' life too. I couldn't keep him in the dark, he had to know.
"I found this is my locker this morning." I stated with a frown, taking the envelope out of my bag and handing it to him.
He took it without questions and opened it. His eyes widened in shock as he read the note and discovered the photo.
"Who is it from?" He asked, handing it back to me.
"I don't know. I don't recognise the handwriting."
"What do they want?"
"It doesn't say, but I'm guessing by the note that they might try to blackmail me." I frowned with discomfort.
"But nothing happened." Louis stated the truth.
"I know but look at the photo." I showed it to him again. "It looks like something did happen. Worse, it doesn't look like the truth at all."
"Why would someone take a photo of us? It's so zoomed that it can't have been an accident."
"What should I do about it?" I inquired.
"Nothing. It might just be a stupid prank." Louis shrugged, but I could tell that he was feeling distraught about this. He had something to lose too.
"I hope it is." I sighed, putting the note and photo back into the enveloped before slipping it into my bag.
Louis was about to say something when my phone rang. I took it out of my pocket and saw that it was Daniel. I answered. He told me that he and the gang were at Bob's Diner and wanted to know if I wanted to come.
"That sounds great." I agreed.
"Do you need a ride?" Daniel asked, and my heart quickened.
"I'm with Louis, he can drive us." I said quickly.
"Why are you with Louis?" Daniel demanded.
"We'll be there in twenty minutes." And with that I hung-up the phone.
I turned to look at Louis who raised an eye brow at me. "Daniel is ok with us hanging out, right?" He asked.
"I guess... we haven't really spoken about it." I shrugged, suddenly feeling guilty.
"Oh ok..." Louis trailed off. We both sat there in silence.
"Do you want to come to Bob's?" I asked, and he nodded.
As we drove I couldn't help but stare out of the window at the passing landscape. The music playing in the background made me feel like I was in a music video, but somehow even that sensation couldn't help me stop dreading the moment we would walk into that building
What if this mysterious writer was there?
