Wednesday, during lunch period, Lena skims through the cafeteria, searching for Mia's dark hair while holding a water bottle and a salad on both hands. Today, they decided to eat inside because it seems like it's going to rain in a few seconds with the dark, gloomy clouds filling the sky. As she passes the jock's table, who are throwing chicken wings at each other, Tony crosses in her way.
"Oh. What's up, Tony?" Lena asks, smiling.
He leans closer, his minty breath persistent. "Where do we talk?"
Lena cocks her head to the right, seeming confused. "Huh? Explain yourself."
Tony looks around him while biting his thin, soft lips. "You read my text so you have to know! You even replied to me with an 'OK.'"
"I did?" Lena murmurs, trying to remember.
"Anyways, where do we talk? Privately," he says, eyes focusing behind Lena where Andrew is sitting at with his baseball friends.
"I'm guessing by your tone that in school is too risky. After school," Lena demands, hoping that she isn't taking forever to meet with Mia. Her head suddenly gives a painful throb in her temples. She grips her head and, in a few seconds, the pain is gone. The only thing now roaming in her mind is the note she received from XOXO in her locker. Someone knows.
"Are you okay?" Tony examines her face closer.
Lena blinks a few times and nods, smiling. "I'm fine. Just a small headache because I haven't eaten anything yet, I guess."
"Ok," he answers and leaves towards Andrew's table.
"Finally!" Mia yells from behind. "I was looking for you like crazy."
One of the athletes on the table next to Lena points at her, not-quiet-enough whispering to the guy next to him, "Dude, she's the girl that sent Rowan to jail!"
Lena rolls her eyes, ignoring the punch she feels in her guts due to his words. She chases Mia to the table she saved near the window, gripping the salad she's holding.
Dude, she's the girl that sent Rowan to jail! Idiots.
Lena and Mia sit in the white table, facing each other. A lightning lights the grey sky with sparkling yellow, making everyone face outside.
"I heard that Edward Hughes is hitting on you!" Mia squeals, throwing her thin hands in the air. Edward Hughes is the new boy that barely joined Katerina High this senior year. Apparently, he comes from somewhere in England but came here because his parents are investing in a clothing company near Katerina.
"Wasn't he dating a sophomore girl?" Lena remembers the gossip she heard back when everything was normal with Rowan. Does anyone consider a guy physically abusing a girl normal? Lena does, or at least used to.
"Nah. That girl made it up because she was obsessed with him," Mia answers. "She should be embarrassed. I mean, what a loser!"
"Right. And about him having a crush on me, well, I'm not ready to start a new relationship," Lena confirms, stabbing a piece of tomato and putting it in her mouth.
"Come on! He's so damn hot," Mia whines, also taking a bite from her salad. "I saw his shirt lift up once in my architecture class while taking his sweater off and those few seconds where glorious. He has abs!"
Lena giggles, taking a sip from her water. This is the Mia she loves—girly and witty. "We'll see," Lena whispers, winking at her. Just as she says that, a body slumps in the chair next to her. She turns to her right and, randomly, there is Edward showing his sparkling-white, straight teeth. His Invictus cologne by Paco Rabanne fill his surroundings, that includes Lena and Mia.
"What did she say?" He looks at Mia, running a hand over his Archie-like, red hair. But unlike Archie Andrews from Riverdale—a series Lena and Mia are terribly obsessed with due to Jughead—his hair is gelled back into a firm quiff.
"Wait. He told you to tell me?" Lena howls.
Mia shrugs innocently, sticking her lips out like a baby. Edward's eyes change back and forth between the two gorgeous girls on front of him, until he decides to interrupts the Lena-and-Mia argument, "And?"
Lena takes a deep breath. "Edward, you're attractive. But I'm not ready to date anyone." She finally breaks her eyes away from Mia, focusing on him. His piercing, pearl grey eyes stab her heart.
"Would you at least go to prom with me?" he insists.
Prom? Lena forgot that prom is in two weeks! In the other hand, the school hasn't been reminding students about prom enough anyways. The disappearance of Karen has made everyone forget about it completely.
She sighs, knowing that she doesn't have any special boy to attend prom with. Tony is out of the list because maybe Andrew and him will get the guts to go together. "With one condition," Lena blurts out.
Edward folds his arms, raising an eyebrow. "Spit it out, beautiful."
"Promise me the best night." Lena winks at him.
"I promise." He stands up smirking and walks away.
Mia starts clapping while smiling wide. "Forget Rowan and welcome Edward! That's a fantastic upgrade."
Lena looks down at the floor, hiding her forced smile. What if Edward also hurts her just like Rowan did? Don't think that! He won't, are Lena's thoughts. She picks up her chin and peeks behind her. A group of wannabe girls, that always seem to copy Lena's style and movement, are glaring at her with furrow eyebrows. Mia notices them too and rolls her eyes at them. Now that her bruises are to the point of fading in a few days, she's coming back more confident then before.
"Yes, bitches. Lena is going to prom with Edward!" Mia yells at them, blowing a kiss at the end.
The old, popular Lena is back. And she's bitchier than ever.
